Great find and not half bad story to go with it. If it worked right off the top it would not have been that great, but now you can tell folks how you brought it back from the dead. Then they go ooooooOOOOOOoooooh.
You might want to pick up a digital meter so you can check voltages n such. A great thing to have if you are just getting into fixing the stuff.
As to the vacuum thing. I have a couple of paint brushes that are strictly for my arcade machines and cleaning and such.(i.e. not for paint). I got a really soft fluffy brush for the delicate stuff you want to just loosen the dust off of (small wires and circuit boards). Then I have a couple of harder brushes for surface area stuff. Just get a shop vac hose near where you want to dedust (new word. Just be ok with it

) Then just brush lightly. If you are going to do the monitor, just be REALLY careful. Also make sure that you are not touching any metal on the brush in case it touched something you ought not touch. But you can get that thing looking quite nice and
newum... well not so old. If the insides are covered with a surface other than wood (or dust), cloth diapers work great with some windex (avoid any electronics). Also try to avoid paper towels as they leave little paper flecks everywhere. For vinyl surfaces (like CPs) after it has been cleaned, I use some automotive shiny stuff (cant remember the name) but it is oily, and kinda sux for a day, but it is great rejuvenator for cps.
