Why Such A Huge CP?!?
« on: February 08, 2007, 03:46:13 pm »
I've often wondered as I was browsing through the various CP's that people have just why in god's name do people make them SO FRIGGIN BIG.  By BIG I mean DEEP.  There is like 100 yards of real estate from front to back on some of those CP's...

...well,  I now have my answer...

While playing an intense game of World Championship Bowling Deluxe,  I really put my shoulder in to it and let loose on the trackball with all my might...knowing that I only had approximately 9-10 inches before plexi I instinctively "pulled up",  only to jam my middle finger on the friggin' bottom overhang of the marquee effectively breaking a bone.

I sit here with a swollen middle finger pondering the whole huge CP question...and it's answer....in pain...ugg.

No doubt, I'm surprised by some of the swings people take. Take a look at a goldenTee machine - it has a sloped piece of glass. It would be hard to stub your finger on it.

I really busted my finger pretty good on a slikstik cabinet. Both the finger and spinner made a crunching noise afterwords.

Prior to this incident,  I had stubbed my right ring finger on the damn P2 joystick...had countless times jammed my hand against the plexi (which HAS a slope...but not enough)... and had "nicked" the marquee overhang a couple times.

I think I like SHUUZ! better...it needs a delicate touch.

Do ultra hard rolls really make a difference in World Championship Bowling?  I used to roll really hard but I found I was getting the same scores rolling normally (and fewer "grandma's teeth" hehe).

I'm in the process of building a three sided cocktail cab with the trackball on to of the glass. What can I say I like GT. ;D

Hard rolls don't make the game play better, it makes ME feel better! Similar to how I'll actually shift my body to simulate the movements on screen(yeah, I'm one of those guys).

The GT cab may be sloped, but the ease of stubbing your finger on the panel raises exponentially with the amount of alcohol consumed. I say this from plenty of experience.  ;)

I also am one of those guys. A couple years ago in Wal-Mart. There was a little kid (about 7 or 8 I guess) who also was one of those guys playing a PS2 demo game. The screen was up about 8 foot high on a shelf, so the kid had to have his neck cranked straight up to see the screen. He was jerking all over the place as he played. Then apparently he wanted his character to go backwards, so he jerked back as he normally would. But the force of the jerk combined with looking straight up was too much for the kid. He went flying straight back into the shelves behind him. He sat there for about 10 seconds, looked at me, and then got up and ran off crying. I feel bad for laughing at a kid, but it was hilarious.

...yah I know...but harder rolls make the pin sounds louder and I like loud pin sounds...

...or something like that.

It happens with Golden Tee too...but my friends all suck at Golden Tee,  especially when intoxicated...so we always end up playing Shuuz or Bowling...

I think this may be a good time to ask a question that went unanswered a few weeks back.

I want my track ball the same height as the glass on my cocktail table and i want to know if a 1/4' lip of glass around the edge of the mounting plate would be a problem or should I have the glass shop cut a 3" hole for the trackball to stick up from? The second idea leaves a small rounded 1/8 edge all around the the trackball itself.

I don't want to highjack the tread but it seemed like the right time to ask.

Rackoon:  I use 1/8" plexi for my CP top and with the plexi I have a simple 3" hole with the lip of the plexi rounded.   Playing Centipede,  for example,  you don't even notice the 1/8" lip... playing Golden Tee or Bowling,  MOST of the time you don't even notice the 1/8" lip,  but ONCE in a while your finger will rub on it,  not bad mind you.

At 1/4",  I am not sure how bad it would be...bad i'd imagine...but maybe you can either bevel the edge down or get it rounded VERY smooth.  Also,  why use 1/4" thick glass,  that is a bit thick.  My Atari cocktail cabinet uses 3/16" and that's decently thick...and heavy.

1/4" is OK, as long as you round it off or bevel it. It works well for precision games that mainly use the fingertips (and is actually quite comfortable). It doesn't really suit bowling and golf games though, since you should have an extra high lip on those, not extra low.

Oh yeah, I forgot to actually give a link to the thread I was posting the picture from...

There's certainly differing viewpoints on the subject. If you have the tools, try a mockup with plexi first. If you don't like it, it's cheaper than glass and you've not lost a lot (especially if you only buy a small enough square to mount the trackball to).

That's about my take on it as well.  I used to play Golden Tee a lot at various bars.  I'm not one to get a running start when I'm doing this but my buddy is.  I always played better than him.  I only use my two thumbs.

Thanks for the info guys. I have used a 1/4" piece of plywood and rounded the edges and it felt OK. I have a brand new GT track ball and would hate to have to sell it and get a highball. Also, the thing is that it isn't hooked up to my cab yet so I cant try it with GT. :dunno
I just don't remember what kind of swing I used to use when playing GT, its been several years. :hissy:

I saw a 32" screen Golden Tee with the monstrous set back CP go for $250 on ebay the other day.  Would've been worth the shipping for anyone that into it.  (I almost bought it just because.)

I'm much more of the wild, running start kind of players. I had virtually every record on every hole at my local GameWorks using that method. Of course, I'd use the two thumbs for certain putting situations. I need a huge CP for my style of play, which is why I'm building two cabs (one of which will be a showcase).  ;D
