Greetings,

I just stripped the old overlay from a Robotron conversion control panel.  Now there is a bunch of tacky glue residue left on it... and I am having the darndest time getting the residue off the wood  :banghead:...

Does anybody have any tips for getting old glue residue off a wood control panel???

I have tried Goof Off... :dizzy:, but it just kinda absorbs into the wood  ??? and barely softens up the glue, I guess it can be done that way but it would take days to do... very laborious...

Tried rough grit sandpaper on an orbital sander, but it just kinda puts dust over the tacky surface so it is not tacky anymore, but the glue is still there  :badmood:...

Just bondo-ed the extra holes, and I have the new overlay ready...  I am thinking if I can not get all the glue off, I can just sand it smooth as possible, then primer the surface and put the new overlay on top of that...

Any body have any suggestions???

You're on the right path.  Goo-Gone is the best thing for this.  Don't cover it, work in small areas and work your way from one end to the next.  You should also allow time for it to penetrate.  You can speed this up a bit by massaging it with your fingers.

That same technique works well on the third date, too, BTW.

I did this to a Stargate panel years ago.  I used a belt sander with very rough grit paper.  The results were fine but it took a long time.

If I were to have to do it again, I would use one of those wire brush strippers you attach to a powerdrill - I'd imagine it would go much quicker than the sander as the belt kept getting gummed up from the glue.

I WOULD NOT use Goof-Off or any other solvent!  Remember, that'll seep into the wood and may give you problems when you try to stick another overlay on there!
