BYOAC Token: Up close and personal
« on: February 01, 2007, 06:13:47 pm »
I got myself a new close-up lens set for Christmas, and of course the first thing I took a picture of was the original 2004 BYOAC token.  Attached is a small piece of that image; the full image is at http://flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=372172443&size=o .

Actually that's some badass detailed closeup capability..... I'm envious.

Very cool.  Just out of curiousity, what are the specs on that lens?

The camera is a Sony CyberShot W7; the filters are from a Bower Digital Macro Kit, 30mm, which consists of +1, +2, and +4 diopter filters.  The pic was taken with the +4 and +2 stacked together.  I don't know enough about photography to know what specifications would be on the lenses other than the diopter and diameter.

I saw your picture of the 2004 token and thought that I would take one of my own.  It can be found here.  WARNING!!! Picture is NOT dialup friendly!

Nice! I have a macro feature on my lens, but no where near that level of "closeness" Great pics!

The rolleyes smilie implies sarcasm, but your post didn't seem sarcastic. I am confuzzled.

Santoro's tokens are the reason I want to have a working coin door.  ;D

EXIF says it's a Canon 20D. Doesn't say which lens though, just the focal length

I used my Canon 20D with a 70-200mm lens.  I also used some extension tubes I have.

Lemme add some close ups from the 2005 and 2006 coins.

2005 Full frame (closed up to part of the coin) The coin is a tad dirty

2005 detail

2006 Full frame. Side lighting used. This makes the flat surfaces black and the edges light up

2006 Detail. For some reason the lines here are not as well defined as on the other pictures. What's really cool though, is how the corners of the base of the cannon are laying over the edge detail. Nicely layered!

Other side of the 2006 coin. This time I used axial lighting. This technique (using a piece of glass at 45 degrees over the coin) makes the light appear to be coming straight from the camera lens. It renders flat areas white and edges black (since they bounce the light way from the axis)

I got myself a new toy. A set of extension tubes which make my macro lens enlarge even more. I'd guess it enlarges by a factor of 2. Full frame picture shows about a quarter of the coin.

I thought I'd try it on the coins. Depth of field is really wafer thin so focussing is incredibly difficult. Even the flex in the floor from me stepping away from the tripod would move the coin out of focus.

Anyway, here are some 100% crops:

Joystick on the 2005 coin

Cannon on the 2006 coin

Player 1 on 2005 coin

In this case simply the sun with a diffuser disc to take a bit of the harshness off. I just wanted to try the extension tubes out :P
