Questions from a newbie
« on: January 31, 2007, 09:29:29 pm »
I'm in the planning stages for a wall mounted jukebox inspired by the one on mameroom.  Never done this before, so there's a lot of info to take in and this website is a fantastic resource.  Hope you guys can help me out - sorry if these appear to be dumb questions.

1. What width of MDF would you use for wall mounted jukeboxs?  I know the arcade cabinets are usually built with 3/4" but I'm thinking with the stripped down components (and lcd monitor) inside I should be able to use 1/2".

2. Trying to decide what speakers to use.  I have a nice set of Creative 2.1 speakers, but I don't think I can fit the subwoofer in the box (or even if I'd want to) and I don't want a bunch of wires hanging out so I'm thinking I may go with a 2 speaker setup instead.  I was looking at the Creative GigaWorks T20s, but also considering car speakers.  If I go with the car speakers, could I get away with hacking the amp from some pc speakers?  If not, what combos of amp and speakers have you had good luck with?  Not looking for something that will shake the house down - will mostly be using the jukebox as background music.

3. Any recommendations for cooling?  With not much space inside the cabinet, I'm not sure how hot it would get.

Thanks in advance.

1. 1/2" should be fine

2. I wouldn't skimp on the speakers and sub. If you going to spend the time and effort on a jukebox you will appreciate decent speakers. Why not just use your Creative's, and run the cables to the sub down the wall in a peice of condute or similar, painted the same colour to match the wall.

Car speakers would probably be to much hassle if you just want it for mainly b/g music.

3. As for cooling, you could design your cab so that you can place some case fans (say 12cm) to circulate air through the cab where the pc parts are located. If you get the LED ones they can look cool too.

Here's what I did...there is a 12cm LCD fan behind that grill.

Good luck.
