juke project off to a rough start
« on: January 30, 2007, 11:56:56 pm »
so i win (sorry I was just the high bidder) on a "15 inch ELO touchscreen" on ePay. I rush right out and buy the wood to construct my cabinet. Since I'm all thumbs i measure a dozen times and cut once.  Even at my snail's pace days pass by, each day that the UPS man fails to stop by my house is like X-MAS morn w/o presents.  Finally he arrives and....

I got beat like Mike Tyson's first wife.  The monitor is in crappy condition and it's smaller than advertised.  Argh.  But I figure I've got a better chance of seeing Allah than getting my loot back so it's off to Home D for some more wood. Never cut the wood before you have the monitor, even if you have the dimensions off the company's website.  You never know when some idiot misleads you on GreedBay.

Ouch.  How far off is it? Is it a CRT?  I have a 15 inch ELO CRT touchscreen, I can make comparison measurements if you want to check to see if you got the right monitor... If the seller sells a lot of monitors, he may have just shipped the wrong one; don't write it off and rebuild until you at least see what the seller has to say.

i contacted the guy to find out what's up. he claims it was damaged during shipping.  which is very possible since he packed it with newspaper. so I asked if I could get my money back - he says no.  for some reason he wants to check to see if there's shipping insurance.  i can use the monitor in my juke. my big issue is how do you claim something is in good condition and it arrives like that.  and i hate greedbay because if I leave this guy negative feedback he'lll do the same for me.

I know its not the greatest advice in the world, but I never give anybody feedback until they give mine. I pay for the product and its shipped. Theres nothing more they can say other than "Fast payment".   ;D

After they leave my feedback I leave theirs. If I was to receive my product destroyed like that I would hold them completely responsible. They packed the product, they paid for the shipping. They failed on their end of the bargain.

Do you still have an ebay link?
Did it have pictures on the auction?
What did the box it came in look like, any noticable damage there?

the box was in rough shape, but I think the box has been recycled a few times.

here's the link
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=008&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&viewitem=&item=180075706345&rd=1&rd=1

and the sellers name is bargainsulove.  It's kind of funny that you ask lew since I'm building a replica of your juke.

Looks like the same monitor in the auction photos. As long as it works and the touchscreen still registers then you are good.

If you are saying it is smaller too, then you need to realize that monitor size is measured differently than TVs. In monitors they add the bezel to the final number whereas in TVs its the viewable screen.

So a 15 inch monitor has a 13 inch viewable screen.

ok the screen measures 13 and some change so I guess that's ok.  It does work, and I can use it for my juke so I'm not completely jammed up.  But I would never send a package like that.  I understand that I bought the monitor on the cheap but this guy charged me $45 to ship a monitor 100 miles to me and then can't even package it properly,

If you don't plan on using the monitor -

I would be content with losing only a little money. Like, offer to split the cost of shipping with him and refund your product. Offer to ship it back if he pays for it.

If you plan on using the monitor -

but are unhappy with it. Ask him to reduce the price to compensate for the horrible state of the monitor.

Your call

If he shipped UPS, it's insured up to $100.  If UPS issues you a check, you have both a check and a monitor.  :)

UPS can deny your insurance claim if the item wasn't properly packaged.

UPS can deny your insurance claim if the item wasn't properly packaged.

From my experience - thats the first thing they do. I had a helluva fight with UPS to get my insurance money back. First thing they did was pickup the item and they delivered it to it's origin address, and then they denied my claim. I had to fight with them for nearly 6 months before they sent me a check for half the amount as a settlement.

I don't buy insurance on shipping anymore.

The sad thing is that that thing only cost about $18 to ship. I sent 1 from florida to wisconsin for that. I till have 2 more that have been advertised on here a couple of times but only 1 was sold to a memeber.

have him give you back half the shipping as compensation atleast.

Generally a 15" CRT will have ~14" of viewable space, plus the model #ETC140C-8SWB makes me think its a 14" monitor.

Plus a quick google search comes up with it being a 14" monitor.  I'd ask for $20-$25 back from the seller.  Doesn't matter that the item sold for less than $20, the seller was inflating the shipping.

your pictiure dosnt look to be the same monitor as the one on ebay
unless it just the pic quality
the top of the one you have has a def white mark the one listed dosnt

I wouldnt worry about the neg feedback as genuine buyers and sellers while look at both parties

if you give him neg he will give you neg back email him and ask for full refund as item is not as described

if you paid with paypal put a claim in or via ebay

check his feedback for item 180075706345 he uses stock photo and dosnt state on listing  so has misled you

If you paid by paypal put a claim through them

goods not as described is an option on the claim
I didnt check if he had sold any more of these just had a quick look but if he hasnt stated that the picture is not the actual item then you should have a good case
for him to refund fully but he will have to pay the return shipping you might end up with the monitor anyway

well after some real life stuff - my boss working me harder than a stripper the night before her rent is due, the weather turning bitterly cold in my ghetto workshop and my washing machine creating a pond in the laundry room I'm back on track.

My original goal was to copy leapinlew's design by not make it as guady (I do love the spinning grill covers though) and just connecting it to my home system.  But I need flash, I need the bling or as the old lady says the "Mike Jones ring tones".  So I'm off to buy a cheap 600 watt kicker from Pep Boys, an amp and a power converter.

To those who might question my reasoning behind purchasing a cheap kicker - I have a a 2 yr old who I'm sure one day in the near future will put a lego through the speaker.

More pics to follow

The original monitor I bought and the seller were more trouble than it's worth.  I've been stung by my last 2 ebay purchases.  I think I'm all done with that unless I can pick up the item in person. I bought a new monitor for this project
