Donkey Kong on MAME won't register quarters...
« on: January 29, 2007, 12:41:32 pm »
Okay, so I put together a MAME cabinet this weekend, and I need a little help!

I wired in the coin slots to the 'coin 1' and 'coin 2' on my mini pac.

When I load MS Pac Man, and I put quarters in, it recognizes the coin, and adds the credits.

But I can't seem to play Donkey Kong.

My question is, does that particular game maybe have the coins wired to different keys?  If that's the case, how do I fix it so that Donkey Kong recognizes when I put in quarters?

Thanks!

Donkey Kong only has one coin chute.  So your 2nd coin chute probably won't do anything.  But I'd also check your mappings in MAME.  In game, press tab, and then select 'input this game' to see what it's mapped to.

Okay, so I think that I have the problem.  If I remember, the left coin chute won't work and register quarters... so no problem for Ms Pac Man since I have just been putting quarters in the RIGHT slot.  But DK can't see that...

So I can either switch the coin slot wires, OR re-map the DK coin to #2.

Right?

i would do neither.  i would trace the problem.  obviously your coin1 is not working.  it is probably a wiring problem.  or maybe a problem with your encoder.  i would fix that

Do coins just not drop all the way through (they don't hit the wire), or does hitting the wire for the switch just not trip it? What kind of coin door do you have?

If the coins won't drop through, remove and clean the coin mech. Replacement mechs are pretty cheap if cleaning it out doesn't work (knowing which ones you need for your coin door will help, but they're pretty universal).

If the switch isn't registering, check the wiring. You can try checking for continuity between the switch and the minipac with a multimeter or continuity tester. also check continuity between the switch's contacts when the switch is tripped.  The switches are replaceable.  As a temporary solution, I'd just remap that switch to be P1 start in MAME's "Input (general)" menu.
