Elo 17" / Kortek XX03N / 1703 (?) - h-size issue
« on: January 27, 2007, 03:06:13 pm »
(Modified. See last post. Slowly getting there but still stumbling...)

Got my hands on two different monitors...

First one is an Elo, but I can't quite seem to figure out the model, it's a 16" touchscreen CRT, the tube itself is by samsung M41KUK36X55 (curved front, some sites claim it's a 17" but, well, isn't, at least not effectively  :) ) in an open frame, brand new, with an Elo touchscreen glass plate and IntelliTouch controller.

The controller sports an Elo label: SCN-IT-SPH17.0-006-000 / 02899A-176.
(Added) The tube is a Samsung M41KUK36X55.
(Added) It is a Kortek 1703N.

This monitor was intended to be used in some sort photo game application, but was never actually used. The PC for that game was an AMD-K6-350 with an onboard SIS video chipset.

I *think* it's a regular VGA monitor, and not an arcade monitor per-se, though the screen res wasn't too impressive. I can't find an Elo type number anywhere else, which is weird because it looks (in design and build) a lot like the newer models listed on their website.

Anyone who knows the specs of this monitor, and in what resolutions I can safely run it? I'm now going to try to 'disassemble' the config of that PC that came with it to figure out the config and the drivers.

The whole idea of having a mame box with a touch screen appeals to me, no trackballs or menu's, just point a finger :) Though the screen is a wee bit small, I admit.

Okay, I figured out this monitor works at 640x480 at 60 hz, and works fine... sort of  :( Just one problem, the 'horizontal size' pot doesn't allow me to decrease the width enough to see the edges of a (windows) screen  :( Anybody got a suggestion? Modify the board? It's a small daughterboard with a pot and a resistor. (Diagrams welcome ;) )

I used a laptop this time, a Dell 810, as signal source. Does it make a difference if I use another video card? I also noticed that this laptop doesn't allow me to set the frequency to 50hz, but that should not affect the horizontal size, or should it?

Gosh, it's so long ago I did anything in electronics  :( Anyway, some further investigation shows it *may* be a Kortek, at least a daughterboard sports a label Kortek 170F-SUB REVA.

Ah, a little more googling the net brought me to the Kortek XX03N, and what do you know, that number is listed on the PCB. I've found some schedules and info on the XX03NA, not thus far on the XX03N. Or perhaps I should go for a 1703N... more googing coming up...

Okay, after a little more looking around it looks like it is a Kortek 1703N with a focus board gone bad. I'll try another one (got more than one  :) ) to see if that one has the same problems. It does leave me with a question though: does anyone know the difference between a 1703N and a 1703NA?

Also, what is the right resolution? I've seen now pages stating that the NA does 800x600 and 50..70 herz ( http://www.kortek.co.kr/ ) but that doesn't work for the unit I have here (which is an N, not an NA). Somewhere else was a resolution of 720x400 mentioned (haven't tried that one yet, I need a PC that can generate it).

I also spotted another difference: the control PCB does NOT feature a pincushion pot, in its place there is a slot for a brightness pot which is actually empty. Duh.

Anyone knows more about the differences between the 1703N and 1703NA?

Got another unit and indeed this one does 800x600! So the first one I tried was broken... Focus board, appearently, and I noticed a darkened spot on the PCB under one of the diodes. Unfortunately fixing monitors has never been my forte  :(
