Cabinet friendly karaoke player that accepts .zip of .cdg/.mp3?
« on: January 26, 2007, 01:19:22 pm »
Hey guys,

Is there such a program as the title states?

I've ripped my 100+ CD karaoke collection to .cdg/.mp3 and .zipped them up.  I would love to find a karaoke player that is mame cabinet friendly and is able to use the .cdg/.mp3 files inside the .zip that will be used to populate my song listing.  Just looking for a way to keep my cabinet as is without having to mod in an outside cabinet accessible cd/dvd drive.

Yeah, I've searched many times with various keywords and really haven't seen anything of interest yet.

You might try the DOSCab/WinCab Section.

Ver 3.0b7  "- Added rudimentary MIDI (.MID and .KAR) support."

I'm not sure exactly what that means....and I've never used it, but it might be a place to start.

as you can see none support zip yet for these players on wiki yet (as I can see?).

I can't even add zip support to AMB since I dosent have source for it anymore.

You also need to unpack them again and use NTFS file system to compress CDG files.

Freebox supports them but not as zips... Unzipping them is't a bit problem though and you are away.

GameEx has a built in Karaoke player that supports .cdg/.mp3 files.

GameEX is a game frontend, not a plain jukebox player. Not the best way to just play karaoke.

I remember I created a a Command Line karaoke player in last year. I think it a update time for that player to play zipped files.

I release it here, when it ready.

Then you would use this commandline karaoke  player with any FE, that support command line to play these zipped files. These files would of course act like singles.

You just said that GameEx is a FE, "Not the best way to just play karaoke", then you talk about a command line karaoke player for a FE? I'm not really understanding the contradiction in your post.

GameEx has a fullscreen DirectX karaoke player with instant play, and song queue mode. That's better than running a command-line app for karaoke.

Why not ask Tom if he can add an option to make GameEx run as a standalone karaoke player. I think a few people would like that for their jukebox cabs.

It directly overkill to use GameEX to just to play karaoke.

Do you really need to install .net 2.0, DX 9.0C and WMP 9?
Should Dazz pay 25$ to get rid of the nasty nag?

... Just to play karaoke files?

It is about over 100 to 200mb install. It not a critic of GameEX, just say it a overkill.

Im now nearly finish with zip support, wich I release with source code included, in a another thread.

Since it a command line, it can STILL been used with GameEX and other FE.  Personly Im would just use a little frontend like mamewah or such.

I don't remember anyone (Dazz) mentioning the specs of the system he will be running the jukebox with, so whats wrong with giving options? Not everyone has a problem with .NET, most XP machines have DirectX 9.0C already installed and personally I keep up to date with WMP on all my machines. Just because you think that's a problem doesn't mean other people will.

You mention MameWah, which depends on the VB6 runtimes too. But you don't mention that as an issue.

It's a matter of taste, since I've started coding in .NET I think it's worth having the .NET Framework installed. I have no problem with .NET, yet even with years of coding VB6 I still hate the VB6 runtimes, and avoid most things written in VB6. It is a dead language, I mean you can't even do threading in it. This is an opinion from a coder who knows C++/VB6/VB.NET/C#. But again it comes down to personal taste.

I wrote a command line karaoke player a while ago Actually it is a WMP com object application modified to play fullscreen with ESC to exit. With a free DirectX Karaoke plugin it can play cdg/mp3/kar etc. karaoke files.

wmpfull

You also need to install DXKaraoke

USAGE: wmpfull.exe <filename>

Now there are two command line karaoke players :)

It was fun to create a native player based on a document about the cdg format. cdg inself contain a lots of wasted space, since it can compress them so much. So I can see why more more people want zip support.

My own is a native player and should work very well with win 98+ and not require any additions software.

The good thing about bass.dll: It can play from memory as well, so unpack zip file to hd was not required (good thing).

So we see who is best  :D

So we see who is best  :D

Does yours have configurable appearance, colors, font, text formatting, frame layout, Lyric charset auto-detection, support .kar and .lrc file formats, mp3+g, wma+g, wav+g, support for zipped cdg+mp3, support for Thai, Chinese, Japanese and similar languages? So we see who is best now? Sorry I couldn't resist *duck*

Using GameEx for Karaoke is better IMHO. I think a playlist is a cool feature at parties, for picking a bunch of songs to do. Perhaps you can add that feature to your stand alone player?

I'm starting to feel ashamed talking so much about Karaoke :-[

I'll tell you who's is the best. SPace Fractals... He took the spec and wrote the code himself. You  have just used windows media player and that same codec i use with freebox. That is a 5 minute lazy ass way that i myself used, however space fractal sat down and spent the time to work it all out for himself so kudos to him.

Yeah I know that he wrote it from scratch, but an end user dosn't care about any of that. As a coder I'm impressed but I could write a cdg decoder if I wanted to it's not difficult, half the code is already in C++ in the document he used. The problem is I have no interest in writing my own cdg decoder, so it won't be happening any time soon. The fact is there has been a command line Karaoke player around for a long time already written by me so I thought I'd mention it. This isn't supposed to be a competiton about who has written the most sophisticated cdg player, mine works thats all that matters even if it was a 5 minute lazy ass way to do it (sometimes their my favourite).

Very nice!  Now where can I download this at?  I checked your site and didn't see a download for it unless it's included in your main download.
