May have found an easy way to laminate wood.
« on: April 03, 2003, 06:21:38 pm »
Have a professional do it!  I just went to a local lumber yard and they will put any color laminate on 3/4" industrial grade partical board for $50 per sheet.  That includes the wood.  Now comes the hard part.   How do I cut the stuff without screwing up the laminate?  I don't have a tbale saw which they suggested.  All I've got is a circular saw, jig saw, and router.  Has anyone laid the laminate before cutting the wood?  If I can't cut it without ruinind the laminate, it's not so cheap after all.  Any ideas?

I actully cut with laminate first..my uncles store..he laminate the counter top and all and now needed some cutting but its already laminate..i used circular saw and worked..its was only a minor cut so if you wanna take you chances do it..

Piece of advice..just get the wood seperate, laminte then sand the wood and then laminate it yourself..you do have a router already so cutting your laminte wont be hard to do..

Thats what I would do...honestly I wont try to cut laminate and wood all together no matter how good the saw is..

Roto zip with a straight edge would be my guess.  The router MAY cut it also with the laminate bit but i dont know.  I would say that the circ saw is too slow and it will chip.

well he doesnt have any other saw...circ would be better the jigsaw atleast..

I would still say dont try it...laminating the cabinet yourself would be best..(common sense if you ask me :))

well yeah but he already has it laminated so.  he is better off with the fast speed router with a laminate bit then he is with the circ saw.  One wrong move and the blade will jump and chip the laminate.  i agree he shoul dnot have bought it that way but what can ya do.

I pre-laminated plywood with formica then cut it with a circular saw and it worked fine. Just be sure to use a saw blase with lots of teeth. I think my blade was called a "laminate and finish blade". Just be sure to use some sort of guide to get a straight cut and have the laminate on the top side of the wood when you cut.

I've cut laminate countertops with a jig saw, just purchase a "laminate cutting blade". Only a few bucks. Also, whichever saw you decide to use make sure you duct tape the whole "bed" of the saw, especially if it's an older saw. The bed can scratch the laminate pretty easily. The particles of wood and laminate that get caught between the bed and the surface can also be pretty abrasive.
