My Starfighter Mame intro
« on: January 25, 2007, 04:57:56 pm »
I though someone might get a kick out of this so I decided to post it here. I'm a graphic artist/animator/video producer for a living, so I wanted a cool opener for my MAME startup.

I use MALA, so basically you turn the power on, the computer boots, the desktop displays loading screen as wallpaper (desktop icons and start menu hidden), and then the attached movie runs (larger and less compressed obviously). The MALA splash screen is disabled, so it goes from the (fake) loading screen (desktop image) to this intro, and right into my MALA interface.

At least that's the plan. My computer is disassembled right now, and I created all of this on my Mac. I don't know PCs very well, but I did some testing with other movies before creating this, and it seemed to work OK.

I don't know how else to upload it so I zipped it for here. I also included the interface.

What do ya think?

I'm only seeing a jpg attachment.  Neat idea about the desktop 'loading screen' though hehe.

OK I got the zip uploaded now. Not sure why it didn't go before.

Wow! Looks great!

You do know that someone has re-created the Last Starfighter game that is seen in the move. It's available on the web as a free download and looks nearly 100% like the the game seen in the movie.  I'm afraid I don't have the web address, but it shouldn't be too hard to Google for.

Oh yeah. It's on the machine. They did a great job with it. It's at www.roguesynapse.com. I get pumped just letting it run in the background.

BTW-here's what the interface looks like on the screen (behind smoked glass):

:) Requests? This one took me about 15 hours, so I don't think that will be possible. Not for free anyway and what I'd have to charge wouldn't be worth it for most people (even at a reduced rate).

Nice intro video!

The Last Starfighter is one of my favorite movies as well, especially the soundtrack which sounds awesome on the DVD.

You got it. After Effects, Illustrator and Photoshop together. I rotoscoped the ship out of the scene from the movie, and matchmoved the stars using a filter. The logo was created in Illustrator, and the intreface was laid out in Photoshop.

Now I just have to find a codec that will look decent on the PC. Unfortunately I just burned out the soundcard on my PC, while reinstalling thermal paste. So I get errors when MALA starts up with an AVI. Of course I don't know PCs very well, so that could have nothing to do with it. I made AVI and WMV versions of this clip. I hope one of them will work or I wasted a lot of time.

Now I just have to find a codec that will look decent on the PC.

A DivX AVI File will work well, provided it's encoded properly and with good quality.... Or Mpeg2 will also work provided you install suitable codecs, if you have a software DVD player installed Mpeg2 should use the codecs from that.  I'd recommend avoiding WMV format if you can. The advantage with Mpeg2 is that you can also encode your sound for it in Dolby Digital Surround if you want to, and assuming you have the software to handle it.

:) Yeah I mentioned it above, and then someone else did a few above my last one. I just thought another reference to it was kind of comical.

Thanks for the feedback though.

It would be pretty cool if someone built a cabinet exactly like in the movie.  Then all you would need would be someone to make a game just like the one they played in the movie.  That would be freakin' awesome.

Check out the TechSmith codec. You can design at any resolution in AVI and get a file about a third of what it was. I needed to make several AVIs for my AtomicFE Layout and ran into res issues. I would have liked to use a DV type codec but you are locked to DV sizes. I then rendered uncompressed for a while. HedKaze (sp?) pointed out a tab I had actually never used in the 5 or so years of using premiere. There is a custom tab when you are starting a new premiere project. I made my file size there and chose the Techsmith codec. (You have to download it from Techsmith of course). I hate roto work. Fortunately, a ship is not the killer that rotoscoping hair is, but my hat is still off to you for doing it that way. How long did it take? Ghaw, I love AE. It is starting to rival my love for photoshop (which has been my favorite program in the world (and Canada) for close to 10 years)(aside from MAME of course-wink-wink-).

Yeah, I don't think anyone else has picked up this - that the colors and the shape of the Xurian ships are off. Not a complaint.  It's a cool game and great effort, but it isn't quite accurate.

That doesn't bother me. The only problem I have with it is that when it's in 640x432 or 640x480 mode, "STARFIGHTER" is off the screen in attract mode. It's fine if you're hooked up to a monitor. If it weren't for that it would look perfect on my cabinet.
