Odd problem with Simpsons machine

Hello,

I'm having a rather bad day today..
First off, I was playing X-Men 4 player on my The Simpsons 4 player cabinet.

I go to swap to Turtles In Time 4 player, unplug it all, get the board, reconnect the harness etc and it comes on.

I press the test button on the PCB to change the settings, I then notice the player 1 controller isn't working which is odd as I was only just using that joystick..

I turn off the machine, turn it back on and am greeted to a black screen, even the light to indicate the coin mech is working is off (a wire which links to the harness), however the marquee is lit up and there is indeed power going to the monitor.

I unplug the harness and reconnect it, while reconnect the screen goes all sort of colors, when fully connected again, just a black screen.

I've followed all cables, even swapped the PCB back over and now getting the problem with X-men.

Can anyone please help me?

Get a meter and buzz through your harness.... Given that you're now also getting the problem with the other board, you can rule out a fault on the boards themselves. This is almost certainly a break in a wire somewhere.

Buzz through each wire in turn until yo find it then run a new one.

Also, do you know of anything that can be used to aviod having to solder wires onto the harness?

Also, what sort of wire would I need in order to re-wire if needed, is it any specific type?

Yes.... Assuming the break is not near the very end... just cut the offending wire out, leaving a couple of inches at each end and use a small chock block at each end to connect the new one into that.

Just standard hook up wire..... It comes in various gauges, 16, 18, 20, and 22 are the most common ones. In a harness like that, any of those should work.

Another thing to check before you cut any wires, is that, if there are any molex or similar connectors in the loom, they are tight and the pins are well pushed in place and making good connection.

Somone else suggested that it could be a problem with the power supply.

Thats its not giving enough power to the harness..

Unyet, the marquee is lit up and the monitor power is definatly on.

Unfortunalty, I don't know what is safe to touch on the power supply, there are many plugs down there, all of which appear to be connected.

I got a multimeter, but I havnt a clue how to use it.

I beileve I've narrowed down the problem to the power supply.

It only gives me a 0.02 reading in both the +5v and +12V..

I've ordered a new power supply.
