Simple Machine Themes?
« on: January 18, 2007, 06:23:41 pm »
I was looking around at the SMF site and saw a whole load of themes. Are these available to us? How can we add them to the BYOAC? Or is blue just how we are?

This forum is locked down to just one theme. The main thing with a theme is that if you want to tailor it for your site, then you have to do that with every theme you want to provide. Kind of a maintenance pain.

Bremil is correct. It becomes a nightmare to support customization. We are in fact looking to dump the old YABBSE theme for a new one. Perhaps it might be the standard SMF theme, or one we create new with BYOAC centric colors, logos, icons and layout.

I like the look of this theme okay, and I like the forum links at the top. But there is behavior in this forum/theme that I don't like. Most SMF forums I visit, I can use my forward/back buttons, but this always seems to reset the page for me. So when I'm scrolling down a forum, each time I visit a topic and return, I'm at the top of the page again. I have to keep scrolling back down to find where I left off. Another thing is that links in messages don't open up new windows. I can right-click to get around that, but because of the forward/back thing, I tend to open windows in a new tab frequently.

Dunno if this stuff is just me or not. I use Firefox 1.5 & 2.0 on several different systems with the same behavior.

One thing I'd love to see is a "Show unread posts since last visit" option that I see on most SMF forums. That makes it SOO nice to read posts from all the forums that are new since your last visit. You don't have to click on each forum to find posts you might be watching. Something like this could also increase activity in the slower forums, as a topic may catch someone's eye who doesn't normally view those forums.

Just some thoughts.

There is an option to let the browser use the cached version, but we have this disabled. We took a poll about a year ago on this feature, and most opted for the way it works now. I'm open to taking another vote and see what people want this time around

That actually exists in the SMF theme. It's in the header profile near the upper-right corner of the avatar. If you still don't see it, the direct link is:

Excellent! Thanks for the link. I don't see anything in the upper-right. Could you maybe post a screenshot? I don't know if I'm just blind or it's not appearing for me.
