Button Layout (help please)
« on: April 02, 2003, 06:59:54 pm »
On a six button panel with the joystick on the left.  The default fire button is usually button 1 correct?

How are most of you arranging the buttons?

Like this;

j 123
  456

or this;

j 321        or some other way?
  654

This may have been asked before but I couldn't find the answer through search.

Thanks.

OK,  I found out that most do this;

j  123
   456

but, for other than fighting games wouldn't the fire button (button 1) be more comfortable further away from the joy like this;

j 321
  654

anyone wire it this way?  The fighters could be reprogramed.

The second method is the one that I used, with button one being further away.  It's a tough call though, since most fighters (and Neo-Geos) have button 1 as the closet to the stick.  I most likely will do a...

...on my next cabinet.  I personally don't like the idea of remapping the buttons on a per-game basis, since that kills the "continuity" of it for me.  Personal opinion, of course.

If you don't mind compiling your own mame, I have ctrlr file hacks that resolve this problem:)

I totally agree with the
j  1234
  456
layout... Mostly for 1234 being the Neo-Geo layout
123
456  for street figher.

My question is: for most games that have just a fire or a fire & jump buttons, do you use the 4 & 5 buttons on the bottom row or the 1 & 2 on the top row?

I use

456
123

but I rarely play SF style games.  For these, I plan to redefine the games so the button work correctly-

Button 1 = LShift
Button 2 = Z, etc.

Sir Poonga, if you just mean ctrlr.ini files, you don't need to compile your own MAME to use them, just need to set up the mame.ini file to point to them.  FWIW!

He's talking about ctrlr/ini files depending on how many buttons the game has, to get around making a lot of game specific .ini files
