jukebox style keypads
« on: January 11, 2007, 04:49:47 pm »
I've seen these before in other people's boxes. Usually a little keypad with white buttons, numbers and letters. I'm assuming they are interfaced to the PC using a keywiz of similar. I just found a seeburg L-100 cabinet for sale, and maybe want to continue with my jukebox project.

You've given very little information that someone would be able to use to try to help you.  For example, this keypad would work just fine for a jukebox depending on the software used and what you wanted to control.

Are you saying that's the software you want to run?

There's nothing at that link that shows what you're talking about.

The keypads, from what I remember, consist of two rows of six to ten buttons per row. The top row is marked with numbers, and the lower with letters. Somehow, people interface them to the PC to control a jukebox program (not sure which one)

Just seeing now the picture you posted, drew, the one I am remembering is similar to that, but the buttons are raised.

I think Chris (Dos/Wincab) has assisted in setting up his jukebox prog to use number and letter keys in the row arrangement.   Seems to be the most configurable prog to produce a old working juke with new internals.

AFAIK

Lots of keypads are available. Many, like the telephone style pads, use a switch matrix, so they are ideal for a keyboard hack; in fact, this is probably the one area where a keyboard hack is better than a dedicated encoder.  The problem is that the keystrokes generated will have nothing to do with what's on the keycab so you'll need jukebox software that can re-map all the controls.

problem is, I want something that will kinda fit into the spots where the original buttons were. I'm almost considering buying original selector buttons, and rigging them with leaf switches running into a keyboard encoder. Here's a pic of the cabinet I'm looking at.

That would be ideal, if you can find them.   Look at Jameco.com and mouser.com and see what they have in their keypad sections...

I won the box for $50. I can't find the original buttons, so I think I am going to go with square, labeled Happ buttons, possibly illuminated, into either a keyboard hack or encoder, in addition to two left/right arrow buttons to change the page, and I'm going to throw a volume pot on the control panel as well.

So what do you plan to put in all that empty space up top in that box?

That cab is just too big... I suppose you could put a large plasma TV in there but it's all a little  :dunno To be honest if the cab is gutted it's probably only good for fire wood.

I love how the guy asked about keypads and what he got was a bunch of crap about his cabinet and other off topic replies..

I dont know where to find that keypad - however if you find out - let me know.. I need some kind of solution for a keypad setup for my project.

www.lucky7dvds.com/jukebox

I am looking to do something that can be used on a remote setup of sorts - I will have a control panel that will sit ontop of my soon to be installed bar.

ANY REAL HELP from someone out there that might have an inclination on who makes / sells or where to find those buttons..

Thanks all

Smells like a job for a wireless keyboard hack, but you'll probably have to get the RF receiver closer to the bar.  As far as the actual keys, take a look at this or this (will need serious refurb though.

Thanks a lot for the ebay links - I actually like the first keypad - I will probably bid on that.

Back to the original posters question about the keypad - you wouldn't happen to know what model jukebox they came from - his question basically stems from the original creator of virtual music jukebox showing the wall mountable jukebox that he built - the buttons where used on that machine is the same set I was looking for - also seen in the example photos on this tread..

Thanks again for the ebay link post to those keypads!

The wall-mounted juke doesn't have an actual keypad, I don't think... may just be a set of Happ small square buttons.

Could very well be - they do look like they would fit the bill..

thanks for the input!

I am considering running some kind of low profile wire under the carpet to the inside of the shelving for the "remote" keypad to the bar for the jukebox.. just not really sure I need to find a keypad setup that I like first

Thanks again for the link!

I know these aren't exacty what you are looking for, but try this:

http://www.allelectronics.com/cgi-bin/item/KP-23/search/16_BUTTON_KEYPAD_(4_X_4)_.html

Also search at that site for "keypad" and you'll get a few more.

I'm also working on a wireless remote (using a One For All remote) to control my jukebox project.  (see thread in DOSCab/WinCab section.  I'll know more about that by this weekend).

those are OK but I dont really like all the extra buttons I dont really want the user to have many options.. I guess I will have to use the small lightup buttons and then just turn around and arrange them like the 0-9 keypad

Thanks for the links again - these are some good options however for a master control panel.

These probably aren't exactly what you are looking for either. Scroll down or click "Keyboards with direct outputs without a computer"

http://www.electronickeyboards.com/industrial-keyboards.html#Direct Output

They are a bit pricey ($169)  but they plug into the PS/2 port so you don't need a keyboard hack or encoder.   You can also have the overlay custom done and have whatever buttons you want on there.   They are industrial and won't wear out.

This one could work also: http://www.provantage.com/genovation-683~7GENV006.htm

It's a lot cheaper and can be customized.

Personally I'd probably go with something less expensive like Happ Buttons in a grid layout.    But this is an alternative I came across.

That genovention one was decent.. I do agree - just going to have to use happ can set them up in a grid
that will be the best way..

Thanks for everyones input!!
