A cabinet that big should have a 27" RGB in it.  Wide format monitors don't have the proper aspect ratio for playing classic games, so 4:3 is the way to go.

LCD will be sharp, but maybe too sharp for your taste.  Classic games weren't meant to be seen on a display where every corner of every pixel is clear to see.  So the graphics will look better and worse all at the same time, depending on your point of view.

But you are the guy who will be looking at it every time you play, so this is something you will really need to decide for yourself.

LCD:

1) backlighting issue: what this means is that the side lights of the monitor are always lit.  In games where the screen is saturated with color, it's not noticable.  In old games, and particularly vector games, it's like there a faint white screen over everything.

2) LCDs don't give quite the same kind of color and shading that CRTs do.  LCDs are great for computer graphics, but not so hot on raster-like graphics.  Another thing is that, say eventually you go for an arcade VGA; I don't think LCDs will display native resolutions quite like a CRT.

I love the idea of LCDs.  Perhaps somebody will start making actual arcade monitor LCDs addressing these issues.  Outside of an arcade monitor, I'd go PC - but I like it that crisp.

No matter what you choose I agree that a 27" size is the way to go. I went with a Viewsonic 27" HDTV. It is not as sharp as a LCD monitor, so in my opinion it softened the crispness while preserving great color in a narrow form factor. Since it is widescreen, it is not quite as big when playing classic games as a 27" 4:3 TV or monitor would be. Nontheless it is still quite large. And when you go digital you can enjoy the hi-res bezel art that Mame since 10.7 has supported. What I lose a little in authenticity for the game graphics themselves I also get to enjoy beautiful bezel art, which I just love to complete the nostalgic game experience. (All of this, of course, thanks to all our fellow devs and hobbyists!) Also, some games look okay stretched a little--like the Marvel fighter games, for ex--so you can enjoy some using the full resolution a widescreen can deliver.

Plus if you end up driving widescreen movies or modern PC games through your set-up you're far better off than if you had an Arcade VGA monitor.

Cheers and good luck!

27" Flat screen CRT with s-video at least. My favorite types of games are the same (fighters) and I've found they look best on a nice big flatscreen CRT be it a PC monitor or sony vega.

It's 9am. I'm calling it a nite.

27" Arcade monitor VGA connect if you want a MAME box.  Use a TV for xbox's and Play Stations.

27" tv baby.  All you need to play games is a tv, don't need higher resolution.

Go check out GoodWill.  I found a Sharp 27" tv for $40, and its the jame for my arcade (or will be when I finish the thing).

It's not a really big deal using s-video over component. The jump in quality isn't as noticeable as the jump from standard composite to s-video. Especially capcom's fighters. S-Video is fine for me when it comes to fighting games.

I bought an arcade monitor (still in transit) cos I wanted to see the real deal in the luxury of my home'.  However, I really like PC monitors, and since, with an avga, you can get all the native resolutions, I considered a 32".  The only thing is, CRT's seem to peak in resolution at 22-24 inches, as above that, it does back down to 800*600.
