Best non-classic games
« on: January 03, 2007, 05:05:27 pm »
Hey guys,

Just wondering if you guys had any games you love that have slipped through the cracks through the years that aren't classics. Classics would be the obvious - Ms. Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Burger Time, etc.

Some to consider:
The Glob -- I still really love this game. It's like Pac-Man meets Elevator Action.
Eagle
Shuuz
Timber
Pig Out

What are some of your favorites you think are often overlooked?

Lady Killer.  I'm addicted to it - and it has nothing to do with the naked ladies and everything to do with the gameplay.  Seriously!

I consider anything before '84 classic.   I didn't really like any of the main classics when I was a kid.  My faves were Gyruss and Xevious....and Congo Bongo, cos the graphics were coool.

Maybe the game "Targ"  is not considered a classic. It was at my college so I played it a lot even though it seemed like sort of an econo-game compared to Asteroids or Missile Command.  I think my other favorites like Star Castle or Qix are classics but not mega-hits. Klax is fun too but I guess I don't play to many super obscure games.

Uo Poko is usually mentioned in these threads. Never played it myself, though, I usually stick to Robotron.
I have changed my nickname to "Cakemeister". Please do not PM the Buddabing account because I do not check it anymore.

I sometimes play Klax, it's a good test of reflexes and brain power.

Tapper is another pretty good old game but might be considered a classic.

Another game i used to play when MK and SF2 came out was Art of Fighting for the Neo Geo. Some may not care for it though.

Any Star Castle fans on the board? I loved the rush when you were being chased by the sparks. What I like about it is that although its cool on my cab, the vector graphics mean I can play it in work on my monitor and it looks razor sharp.

My find is Pang (U.S. version I think was Buster Bros.). My daughter and I got rather addicted to it. It seemed so simple.

A mainstream game that I never liked was Frogger. My son found it a couple of weeks ago and I am really digging it now.

A while back a thread like this came through and Juno First came up. I had never played it. It is also a pretty cool game.

I really was into Star Castle back when it was in the arcade. I got a vectrex because it more or less played it faithfully. But Star Castle was pretty main stream though wasn't it?

Qix always rocked.

Twin Cobra, nice call! I haven't played that in eons. I'm going to have to check if I have it!

Congo Bongo was also awesome. I play that one still.
I remember liking this as a kid, but when I tried it at an auction recently I found it kind of slow. I remembered it being a whole heck of a lot harder too.

Oh geeze...I hope I didn't open can worms here with that. I guess I don't know the full story, but from my view it is a Nintendo game boasting Mario, turned mad plumber...with a striking resemblance to his predecessors in DK & DKJ.

Knock-off was the WRONG term. Mario's Reincarnation perhaps? As it was not quite as legendary as 'Donkey Kong' itself (hence the mention in"Best non-classic games" thread) I totally loved the game and played the be-jesus out of it. Surely at least $100, $0.25 at a time. I'm very grateful to be able to play the game finally again, 17 years after my last play at Bodega Pizza!!

Lol you guys have some funny ideas of what is 'non-classic'! Pang? Qix? Jailbreak? Tetris? All classics in my book and most other books I would think.

My fav 'non-classic' is Bomberman World, awesome 4 player action from 1992.

I understand what you are saying but it is so hard to bite ur tongue on the games that you really love...to talk about odd titles that slipped through. Also, when the word 'classic' and 'arcade' game are in the same sentence, FOR ME is a small window of time...like 80-84. This is why I mention Tetris, and all my other screw ups, 720.  :-[

Sorry guys...I'm officially done stinking up this thread any further...psssooouwwn I'm out!  :banghead:

You're not stinking it up.

There are so many definitions of classic. I guess the technical term is anything up to '84.

My interpretation are the most popular, as I listed in the beginning, the kind of games that are timeless and most financially successful. One day, Golden Tee will probably be a classic. Although some probably consider it one already.

I think people should put down whatever they want, and not quivel about the definition.

Paperboy, by the way, is one of my all time favs, and Arch Rivals.
I'm with stupid.

I can provide some history for this likeness as the likeness was intentional as it was the same character. Shigeru Miyamoto of Nintendo created him and is perhaps one of the most influential game designers ever and concieved Mario in Donkey Kong as a future star of other games. There is a wicked interview with him in the coffee table book 'High Score' that explains the entire Mario Story and how he evolved.

Willow is one of my favs.

When I was a kid, there was a pizza shop in my neighborhood that had it. After I pitched a game of Little League, we stopped in for dinner. I was rocking the game like I never had, but had to go to the bathroom like you wouldn't believe.

I was like 10, and didn't want to leave my high scoring game, which was achieved while doing a serious pee-pee dance.

Unfortunately, my bladder won out. It was quite embarassing.

Baby Pac-Man is the oft-overlooked game in the Pac-Man family, but it rocked. It was hard to find where I lived.

Rampart.

Simple but addictive.

I remember my best man and I absolutely destroying a young kid 'cause we wanted to play head to head.
Felt good to give back what I always got while growing up.  ;D

And Commando keeps a hectic pace.  Love that game!

It's a classic, but Rip Off would have my vote - black and white , co-op multiplayer goodness!
