MDF or plywood to support 27" monitor??
« on: January 02, 2007, 11:24:51 pm »
I am almost ready to make the top for my 27" cocktail table.  I am going to cut 2x4s and mount them to the top for proper spacing and support.  My question is what is better or stronger to use, 3/4 MDF or 3/4 plywood?  I will be gluing a 1/4" sheet to the top for a total of 1" but the 1/4 isn't really going to support anything.

I would vote for the Plywood but do not have any data to support my claim.
MDF just seems to warp over time when holding up heavy stuff like monitors.

Either will work fine as long as the shelf is well supported. But I'd go with the ply because it's lighter.

Ply will also be more structurally sound

if you are worried, use some l-brackets like the ones used to put shelves on walls. You could also reinforce the shelf with some 2x4's running the length.

I'd also go with plywood, but oak isn't necessary, just more costly and heavier.  Unless it is seen and you plan to stain it, oak is overkill.

Read that wrong.  Thought he was talking about supporting the bottom.  Carry on.

I just used 2x4's
I had a bunch to use. and was free.

I also added a shelf to my PC desk with MDF. I have had two 19 inch PC monitors on it for close to a year now. now problems yet
