Teacher in need of parts
« on: January 02, 2007, 03:22:24 pm »
Hi!!

I'm a teacher in Canada.  I teach students electronics for workplace (these are courses designed for disadvantaged students who if they get their highschool degree will be moving on straight to work).  Usually we play around with donated and broken computers, but I thought it would be a realy treat for them to build an arcade cabinet.  I've built one before myself a few years back.  Unfortunately while the will is there, the budget isn't.  So...

Was looking for opinions as to where parts can be found on the cheap.  Even used working parts are good.   Any of the essentials - 8 way joysticks, buttons, etc.

Thanks in advance, and happy new year!!

Sincerely,

Mike.

Hi Mike.

Whereabouts are you ?

You may also want to check out CGCC -- there are a couple of teachers there who restore/build cabinets as part of their curriculum:

If you are in SW Ontario (I am in Toronto, but most of the CGCC guys are in SW Ontario), I am sure that some of us have some parts kicking around.

My generic parts cupboard is a little bare right now, but I'm sure I have a couple of 8-ways to spare and some buttons that I won't use.

Cheers.

Wow.
That's great.
Didn't realize there were so many people in the area.  I'm in Toronto (well, Newmarket)

Perhaps we can negotiate something, that would be much appreciated.

Mike.

I have an X-Arcade 4/8way that I would be willing to donate...I just don't know how much shipping it to you would cost.

Nothing to negotiate ... I have at least two 8-ways, a bunch of buttons (I'll have to take a count) and a spare trackball (no PC interface) that you can have for free for a school program, particularly in this province where there doesn't appear to be funding for anything (my daughter is autistic, so I understand the funding issues better than most).

The sticks and trackball are used, but in good shape and the buttons are new & unused.

UPDATE: I have 4 of the same 8-way sticks (found 2 more on a project machine).

If you have an interest, there is an auction at Starburst (Toronto, on Kipling south of Bloor) on Jan 20th (can sombody confirm ... otherwise I'l have to drive by) where you can likely pickup a stripped project cabinet for cheap ($25). I usually stop by (it's 7 blocks from my house) and there are almost always at least 10 or so of the SW Ontario CGCC/BYOAC folks there.

Otherwise, PM me your shipping info and I will assemble a care package for you.

Cheers.
