Where the heck are Candy Cabs?
« on: January 02, 2007, 02:58:00 pm »
Candy Cabs. You know, the little japanese cabs with the huge screens? God I love those. I want one so bad...

Only problem is, I have no idea where to get one! No one here seems to have any, and I can't find any links to them on ebay, etc. I actually found oned yesterday, but it was 1000 dollars with 400 dollar shipping!

I figure that maybe one of you guys reading this topic has a connection to a seller or maybe a hint for me to look into. I'm in Illinois, but I'm heading over to New York in a few months so if any of you know of Candy Cabs over there, I could check those out while over there.

I think they are freaking ugly myself.

There is one of those playing Galaga on a grotesquely large vertical monitor at the local arcade over here. They would totally sell it, though I don't know for how much...they keep price tags on everything around Christmas time, thoughI don't remember if this one had a price tag.

It is located in WV. I could ask the operator what they would sell it for if you would be interested, depending on your location.

I'm totally interested! But I'd want to know three things first...

1: What type of cab? Super Neo 29?
2: How much for shipping?
3: What state(condition)  is it in?

I wouldn't place the burden for answering these questions on you, maybe if he expresses interest in selling it you could give him my email address?

I doubt they would ship it. You'd probably have to pick it up.

As to condition, I can try to take some pictures of it the next time I am near there.

Shoot me a pm so I can respond to you easier once I do take a closer look at it.

 :-\

There's no way that I'd be able to get over to West Virginia to pick it up. Really, I'm hoping for either getting one in a nearby state(Illinois, Wisconsin) or via shipping that is hopefully not TOO expensive.

I would offer to ship for you, but I currently have no way to transport it, and don't have the time to do it either.

Sorry dude.

You may want to look up some local vending companies and ask them if they have one sitting in a warehouse somewhere. You'd be surprised what you'll find. If there are arcade machines in any business around you, then you have at least one vending company too.

Good luck!

Thanks anyway for being so helpful even though you don't even like Candy Cabs :D

Sadly, the only arcade machines around here are at the movie theater, which I think they own themselves instead of renting or whatever. I think they got them directly from Namco. I know that Namco makes Candy Cabs, but I doubt they distribute them in the USA.

It is worth asking the movie theater manager about the games. I would think that a vendor maintains them.
They don't really pay rent on them. The vendor comes and empties the money and gives the theater a cut of the money. In turn, they call the vendor when there is a problem with any of the games.

Barboursville, WV at the Huntington Mall.

That is a bit of a drive from Wheeling...like 4 hours or so.

Here is the info on the arcade:
Tilt Arcade

If you are interested, give them a call and ask them if the White Galaga machine is for sale. Always remember to wheel and deal...It's not like they make a killing on the machine. ;D

If it's a CINEMARK theater, they use NAMCO as their arcade operator. Yes, the game manufacturer/licensor operates arcades here in the USA. Namco has their own repair techs sand the vast majority of the games come from their own factories or from companies they own/control.

You might try richardp171 in the B/S/T forum.
I'm not sure what he has in at the moment, but he gets shipments of them in from time to time.
He's in So. Cal, so I don't know how much it will cost to ship one though.

I used to have one for a couple of years, it was a Jaleco mark 2.  The reason I finally sold it and got a wood full size cab was mainly looks and the control panel.  There really is no space on those candies to do much in the way of mods.   I really like track ball games and that was never going to happen.  The other big thing is I got a wells gardner arcade monitor and it seels that the monitors used in those candy cabs are much shallower than any of the others, ie: Betson, WG or Billabs (I have had them all) so I had to cut a big hole in the back of the candy cab to fit it, can you say electrical hazard?  Anyway having had one I would suggest against it but they are fairly chead if you can find one.  Mine was only $500 out of LA.  A hell of a lot cheaper that what I currently have put into my current cab but I was on a budget back then too.

This is what it looked like, I eventually painted the top dark blue and the base black.  After a couple of moves though it got pretty scratched up so I had stripped it down and was re doing it when I just gave up and built a standard cab.

I don't like the CC  - which I can't find by Google, weirdly - mostly cos it's white.  I really like the old Bubbles poly cab, and even more the new poly cabs, like for DL re-release, etc.  They're black, or gray, or something, and they're curvy.  I could never build a cab like the old days cos they're so....square.

heh, I LOVE Candy Cabs, the ones that I like, I REALLY like. I wasn't born in the 70s-80s and before like most of the BYOAC crowd, and the small, smooth, curvy white design is extremely appealing to me. Without any nostalgic memories to run off of, the candy cabs just seem more desirable to me. The only games in the arcade that I REALLY liked were japanese fighting games like Street Fighter, shooters like Metal Slug, and vertical schmups.

The Super Neo 29 in particular. The more I think about it, the more I want it.  :notworthy:

Yeah - there's not a lot of modding room on these to be sure.  I'll plug the Tornado Twist 2 though - it went into my Super Neo 29 without incident.  I replaced the select button with it and the only thing I needed to do was enlarge the hole to 1 1/8" to fit it properly.  It's a bit high compared to the other controls, but works fine.

That said, I've seen some CP replacements (including trackballs) for these which worked out nicely as long as you're willing to work on it.  Larger CPs look odd, but the right paint / decals should take it where it looks nice.

As to the monitor mounting issue, that sounds off to me.  If you had a 29" cab, then the 27" WG and Betson monitors should fit fine though the frame may need swapping before putting them in.  I've put Betsons in a Super Neo 29 and Capcom Impress and really only needed to do a frame swap on the 2nd since the monitor's chassis sits directly in the cabinet w/o frame support.   Of course with other cabs, YMMV.

I do love the candies though.

I will agree about the CP problem though.
They are made for Asian sticks/buttons, and won't fit much else.
I can't even put regular Happ's buttons on mine because the CP is not deep enough.

Maybe he did a mix/match on the parts for them, and created his own TornadoTwist.

LOL.   Pac-Man and a load of whites please.  The first candy cabs I came across were at a dealers shop in Los Angeles.  They just didn't do it for me.  The dealer said they sold very well.  I guess it just depends on what you grow up with.

There are quite a few suppliers of candy cabs here in australia. I'll post the links to them when I get home for the aussie candy cab fans. I personally dislike them, I loved the variety in the arcades back when I was a kid, most machines look the same nowadays :(

Not really.
I grew up on all dedicateds, and still don't mind the various candy/JAMMA cabs.
Maybe I'm just getting older, but I don't mind sitting at the cab and playing.

Does the monitor on that Tekken cab do vertical games?

If you really want a candy cab send an email to a guy named Matsu gamemachine2003@hotmail.com he is in southern California and imports candies by the container and ships anywhere.

I own 3 candy cabs : Windy (Vertical shmups), Crown (Horizontal Dreamcast), Cyberlead (Naomi2, Atomiswave)

The candy's are really nice cabs with multi res monitors. All of the ones I have support VGA (Windy is hacked to VGA).

They are small enough to go up my staircase and into my game room or home theater without destroying walls.

You can occasionally find some candy cabs for sale on the following boards as well.

NEO-GEO.com (This link is to Matsu's selling thread but there are others US based doing the same thing)
SEGA-NAOMI.com (mixture of sellers)
Killer Cabs (Mostly sellers from over seas)
SHMUPS.com Occasionally you'll find a cab there as well.

The great thing about the arcade hobby is that there are so many different flavors of cabs. Not only woodies..

Here in Vancouver, BC you can't get away from those ugly things! At a mall  about 5Km away they have a whole wall and an isle of of them, about 20-40 (never actually counted) all running what appears to be Arcade OS. They have about 100-150 games on them, all Asian, so i have NO idea what they are :) Allot of the malls here have at least 3 or 4 of them tucked into a corner! come to think of it, the last arcade around here even has 10 or so of them.

:-[ i must admit, sigh, <looks down> i have one... but it isn't my fault, and i didn't really enjoy it, i make up for it by stripping it for parts! I was just minding my own business one day driving along, and this guy was THROWING IT AWAY, so you see i HAD to throw it in a truck and bring it home!

it is a VS City cab, with 2 monitors, 1 on eather side

this is not mine, mine was in WAAAAAAY worst shape. Neither of the monitors work, dead power supply jamma harness was missing and it looked like someone had tried to break in using a pry bar.

Almost got a hernia getting it though, weighs like 200 Kg they are all metal inside with plastic over top. It would probably cost a fortune to ship one

If I hadn't gotten an empty cab for free, I would have probably ended up building a candy/standard hybrid (Candy silhouette, classic standard style).  I love old cabs and always have.  I never liked it when cabs were side by side, because I loved seeing the side art.  Still, I did like playing on a candy cab.  I wouldn't want a gameroom full of them though.  Too sterile.
