Anyone know where to get PINK translucent buttons and PINK LEDs?
« on: December 29, 2006, 03:04:42 pm »
I'm thinking since I only have 3 action buttons on my latest cab I might give some lighted buttons a shot - but they have to be pink!  Any leads would be appreciated!

Japanese buttons! .... You can get pink translucents in those.  As for Pink LED's, there's no such beastie. You'll need to use a white LED to light the pink buttons. Or use a red and a white and the mixed light will be sort of pink. OR use an RGB LED and use 3 x 100Ohm trim pots and you can mix any colour you need.

Sure there are pink led's. fxbuttons sells them, plus here is the link to ledsupply.com's pink led
http://www.ledsupply.com/l4-0-p5th15-1.php

Here are all the colors they offer in 5mm led's
http://www.ledsupply.com/5mm-leds.php

An rgb controller would be massive overkill for this small of a project.

Awesome!  Thanks shardian!  So what do I need to install some lighted pink buttons?  I'm assuming I need an LED for each of the three buttons (I'll order 6 of them for 3 buttons in case one burns out or something).  So what else do I need?

1.  A clear translucent button or a pink translucent button (if there is such a thing)?
2.  Is there something I need to mount the LED into inside the button?
3.  How do I get power to the LED?

I'm going to be hooking the microswitches to the Ultimarc harness that I ordered with the Ultimarc 360.

THANKS!!

I'm guessing I should get the Electric Ice pushbuttons from Randy but now I'm not sure because the buttons will be white when unlit and it would clash with my entire design.  Hmmm... any thoughts about this?  If there are pink translucent buttons I might be better off with those.

it 'may' be possible to dye the clear translucent buttons. I have no idea for sure, but it would be something worth looking into in your case.

That might be an option.  I'm really torn though because I think the lighted buttons would look nice.  Would dying a clear button make it opaque and kind of defeat the purpose?  I don't know

I was originally going to use all translucent buttons (reds and blues). When the LEDWiz and ice came out I was torn for a long time. Finally I decided on the ice. When I first put them in I was actually happy with how the white looked. I was worried because the whole cp is deep blues, reds, and oranges. Now that was just unlit. Once lit man the thing just is beautiful. You can easily make pink with the LEDWiz and RGB lighting. I have made just about any color I could think of (even black when I turn off the machine and turn off the lights  ;). For you, pink is not a far cry from pink so I can not imagine that it would look too bad. Plus when you figure that most arcades had white buttons, no one would think twice until you turned on. I did use translucent buttons for the utility row BTW. Jus my $.02

As stated previously by Fozzy, you don't have to get white or clear.  Japanese buttons can be had in trans pink.  Might take some hunting to find 'em, but I'm pretty sure they exist.

Scroll down and click on the "skeleton" transparent/translucent  Seimitsu buttons. They come in pink.

Cool.  Thanks for the link.  I have a lot to think about.  Does anyone know where I can get some PINK automotive dye for plastic or vinyl?  Something like THIS but in PINK.

I know this is completely not what you asked for, but on the off chance it would work anyway, check out this thread where Luckydevil used plain old Rit dye to dye his joystick balltops.

I don't think Akihabara Shop is taking orders right now.  That's why they'll be hard to track down.

Nice.  It comes in "Rose Pink" which looks like it might be close enough and at $4 per bottle of dye it's hard to resist.  I just hope it isn't totally opaque.

Hmmm... maybe I should order 4 electric ice buttons, a bottle of dye, some pink LEDs and the LED mounting thing-a-ma-jig from Randy that holds the LED in place and supplies the power...  Should be less than $20 for everything I think... I need to price this out...

EDIT:  Woah... this is expensive.

1.  $27.77 for 4 Electric Ice Buttons (3 with the microswitch and RGB drive).  One extra for testing.
2.  $8.70 for 3 pink LEDs
3.  $5.54 for the Rit dye in "Rose Pink"

TOTAL: $42.01.

I'd really like to give this a try but it might have to wait until after the project is finished and I'm looking to spice it up.   :-[
