This supposely a nice card for s-video out or using as component.  It's current 44 bucks with 20 rebate at Amazon.

Strongly NOT RECOMMENDED!!!

The 9550 series is a very much cut down version of the 9600 cards.

Contrary to the description on Amazon, it is actually NOT a quad pipeline card. It's a quad pipeline card with two of the pipelines dissabled!!!

It would work OK for MAME.... but if you run any other 3D or Direct-X software, then don't even think about wasting money on this. It's SLLLLLOOOOOWWWWW!!!

If you're only going to use it for MAME and for its TV out, then it might suit you, but why buy this when you can pick up a 256Mb 9600XT for about the same money.

Best Regards,

Most bottles and jars contain at least twenty-five percent recycled Pacman.
And research indicates that Space Invaders are strongly attracted to people who have recently eaten meat pies.

This card is mention here mainly for people using it for mame only.  2nd, like the poster above, where are u going to get the 9600XT for 20 bucks.  Yes, 3d sucks on the 95xx series, but at the same time most mame games don't even use the 3d side of it.  Even a 75xx is more than enough for mame.

The 9550 is fantastic for MAME, and that is a great price. I paid like 90 bucks for one a few months ago.
It supports the ATI DVI-component dongle, and also will natively run oddball resolutions so you don't need to mess with Powerstrip.

the ATI component dongle on 9x00 cards causes screen flickering on text and lines, which isnt as noticeable in games but its still there.   ATI x1k cards or Nvidia 6/7 series have no flickering.   I have a ATI Radeon x1950pro and tried it out yesterday with component and the picture was solid, trying to pick up a cheaper x1300 now to try out.

I tried a nvidia 7 series (7300gt) with component and couldnt get a color picture, black and white only so id recommend the ATI more at this point.

It's not $20 it's  $24 + shipping...... because at $24 it then falls under the limit for free shipping.  That's also only assuming that you can get the rebate! Anybody outside of the US is not entitled to the rebate.....Otherwise, double the price.

Like I said... If you're ONLY going to use it for Mame then it might suit you....

My 256Meg 9600XT came off e-bay.... Shop arround and have a bit of patience. It took me two months to get one at a realistic price for my cab. Got outbid on about 10 or more cards before I landed a good one. As you're looking for quality on a very low budget, that's the way to go. Patience my young Padwan.

I've never noticed this, where did you get the info? Is it only at higher resolutions?
I'm using it a 640x432 with MaLa and have never noticed any type of flickering.

Shipping is factor against the before rebate price, which is 44, which if my math services right is more than 25 bucks, so shipping is free.  I am not going to debate the rebate as there is just way too many personal preference, but I will say that nowadays if you want something cheap, rebate is something that one must consider.  And yes, this is only good in the USA.

TOK: I own a ATI 9500 and the dongle, have had it for many years and it has always had jittery flicker with interlaced resolutions, theres been many others on this forum who have made posts about it as well.  It is more difficult to notice in games but easily noticed on the windows desktop with text.  Maybe its just my old card at fault or maybe its the SDTV im using but I know others know what im talking about.

svideo looks fine/great btw, im just referring to component connection.

edit: to add I was referring to 640x480 resolution - the newer cards can do 640x480 without jitter,  I use 640x480 on my SDTV and it fits the screen perfectly with the service menu adjustments.

Thanks for the info... I've never noticed it in my front end, but I don't really do any regular Windows stuff on the machine. Its a vertical cab, and I move files and do other admin stuff from another machine. Since it's on a TV, the display is pretty much horrible for computer text anyhow, even in component mode.

I just thought I would throw my 2 cents in here.

1.  This is a low end card that is not capable of playing most modern games.
2.  The 256MB of Video RAM is a marketing ploy.  The additional RAM only comes in handy if you are using resolutions above 1280X1024, such as 1600 X 1200.  However, since this is such a slow card, you would never be able to play at that resolution.

ATI and Nvidia often add extra RAM to low end cards to boost their consumer appeal.

Just thought I would throw that out there.  An old school Radeon 8500 would mop the floor with this card, the only difference is the 9550 is DirectX 9.0 compatible, not that it has the power to use the new features.
