Received my new coin inlaid spinnerknobs from Randy today!!!
« on: December 23, 2006, 04:48:00 am »
I love the weight of these things!  As compared to what came on the originals, these are very solid.  I also wanted to mention that now the damn spinner spins for-freaking-ever!  So, if you had been considering upgrading, I give this product my full endorsement!  Well worth the price of admission.

Here is the comparison of the old and the new.  I'm not sure how much the new ones weigh, but I would say they are three times heavier than the old!!!

Here is the new knobs installed.  Both upclose and from a distance for your viewing pleasure. ;D

Can you give a [mini] review of the "adjustable resistance" feature of them?

Thanks,
Rick

My opinion is that this is much more important then the ability to spin forever.

The endless spinning is great for a Tempest type game, because that is what the original game did.  But a damped feel is what you want for other games.  While you still want the weighty feel to the control that the heavy knob or the ESC/Flywheel gives.

For Arkanoid, you want it to be somewhat damped.  It should barely free spin.  Then for games that used a potentiometer such as Super Breakout, you want it completely damped.

This can be accomplished by putting a couple of layers of felt under the knob, so by lowering the knob you get higher friction.  Sorry if I gave any trade secrets away here Randy.  I really don't know what his new knob uses.  I do imagine the weighty feel makes it feel better then your average knob.

I don't think I have ever said the word knob so much in one day.  Knob, knob, knob...  :laugh2:

Well, I think there was some compliments in there.  There is a felt pad on the bottom of the spinner that you can either raise or lower the knob to get the resistance you want.  The reason I mentioned it spinning forever was due to the increases weight of the knob.

Thanks for the tip mccoy, I was wondering why my Mini Racer wheel would spin FOREVER and my token knob I was only getting like 2.5 -3 revolutions. That felt does slow it down.

Now you had an exsisting Spinner already to go and well I plug my TT2 in for the 1st time and a i get "da ding" but I can't get it to work man. 2 hrs of blank stares. All I get is the DING man! What am I missing here? Any tt2 users have a little trick for that 1st install? It is suppose to be showing as a mouse function of either x, y or z. When I goto my  hardware devices in system I think I see it in there and it says it is working but..It's "No go" anywhere else like windows or MAME32. I wanna play me some TRON and then some arkaniod and maybe some super sprint after that.

Well, after you plug it in and you hear the windows "ding", it should control either the x or y axis in windows.  Is that happening at all?

I'm gonna wait for Randy to come along here and point out what I did wrong...Hopefully he is near a computer sometime through the weekend. If not, oh well., just have to wait. For nice stuff like this you should have to take an IQ test before your purchase. Like say if you didn't score high enough they could be like: oop sorry can't help you. So as to not degrade there product when it falls into an idiots hands.

Also, mccoy the red spinner knob seems like it was made for "The Varsity Club" Randy had you in mind.  NICE TOUCH! Congrats!!

Growing up in my house, we were encouraged to express ourselves.  I coulda gone on and said all kinds of other things. Without doing so, I'll say that I observe people generally being serious about things....whereas I'm serious about how one does things.

He may have been making an outside reference to you making a comment that wasn't necessary in this thread.  I don't really care what you think about my cabinet, but I don't think this thread is the place to share it.  So, in theory, I think you were the first one to go off point.  I'm playing nice, and I gotta tell ya, using intellectual statements just makes that comment look worse.  I'll give you all the encouragement you can handle. :)

Heh heh heh.  No, I wasn't the first to go off point. I was just the first to be serious rather than jocular about it.  I know what you mean about the 'making worse'; it really upsets people.  But, as other things with others, it's an habitual way of explaining.  That it doesn't succeed is something else, altogether.  (Black humour in that, there is.)  In any case, regardless of any possible further response of others, I'll canc my own, here.

Heh.  You probably should send me an email to discuss this.  There are too many details to try to cover in a public forum.

But it should be "plug and play" and we test them all 100% before they go in the box.  Check your cabling against what is in the docs and be very sure you have everything hooked up correctly.

Can you give a [mini] review of the "adjustable resistance" feature of them?

Heh.  It would be difficult for those owning one not to see the method used, so you aren't giving away anything.  The weight / size of the knob, the composition of the felt material (it's nothing like the stuff you get at Wal-Mart), the particular bearing surface and material of the TT2, as well as another very important part, all play a big role in the resulting feel and usability of the feature.

The most important thing is that, with the TokenTop knob and TT2 combo, all of those "knob behaviors" can be achieved easily, reliably and with the durability required for a control of this nature.

Tranq- One thing you will NEVER hear myself claim to be is a English expert...However, since we are now both extremely guilty of thread derailment here and off topic from mccoy's original post of the token knobs...I might as well make the argument that tentatively works almost as good as attentively in that situation. Uh, I stressed almost.

PS: We gots to find something better to argue about here. "Gots to"...Is that proper englay?

No punishment.  Just don't do it again   ;)

Like DK wrote, everyone please make sure you follow the directions for the unit.  The encoder module represents a good chunk of the cost of the unit and can only be replaced rather than a board level repair.  But if you make sure the polarity is observed, it will last virtually forever :)

Glad it's working for you now and that you are having fun with it.  The wheel is one of my favorite toys as well!

D_K, how are you liking your GGG spinner, and how's the performance?

Tranq- i would like to say that i have spent more time wit my spinner, but the truth is I been slacking in that dept. From what I can tell so far though...SUPERB  :o

Can't wait to really give it a work out and come on here singing about how Randy is DA MAN!! ;)

Must be full on legit test though, or whats the point...
