Stick programming in Mame

It might be helpful to know, or remember (as I just recently did) that there are ways to program your stick to do more than just the standard directions.  Particularly for those with P360's, since it's a round movement zone, one could set this 8-way stick to register in a 4-way fashion, thus:  when pressing [enter] in the menu, push the stick in the direction desired (say, 'up'), and, immediately after, press right twice, then left twice.  This will give you 'up not right right not left'.

Likewise, If you happen to have a 45 degree-rotated T-stick, you can do something similar, for use in 4-way games.  Have the T-stick in 8-way mode.  Press 'enter', then press in the direction desired.  In this case, pressing up will register as 'up left'; right will register as 'up right'; etc. This doesn't seem to work well in reverse - for example, using a standardly-oriented 8-way stick and selecting the diagonals for Q-bert, or Congo Bongo.
