Can I disable the OK/Joystick left/right warning?
« on: December 22, 2006, 12:33:18 am »
I've searched and haven't found any great answers on this. I've seen a few people modify the code, but I don't know squat about programing, compiling etc. Is there an easy way to make this happen?

Also, I've read that the warning only comes up the first time you play a game, but it comes up every time for me even when playing a previously played game. I'm using the latest MAME, and MALA as a front end.

Thanks!

Yes... But that information is more than a little bit out of date! It won't help with the current version of Mame.

One of the best ways I have found is by using the Gameex Front End.  It is free and has options to diable all of those warnings.  When I click on a game, it flashes through those warnings very quickly (<1 sec) and I am right in the game.  It is great.  I know this is all personal opinion, but of all the Front Ends I have tried, Game ex is the most flexible, easiest to use and configure and provides the best interface for Mame'ing.  Just my .02.  Cheers.

It is for use with MAME32, yes, but the interface you get depends entirely on what "theme" you use and what options you have selected.  It is fairly idiot proof.  The result is an interface that doesn't leave a hint of Windows to it.  Simply scroll down to the game you want and select it.  Again, not saying it is the only option, but it does have the built in feature of turning off the warnings plus it is free ;D

Like Fozzy said if your not looking to install the latest version of Mame then use nomame... Work sweet for me. Of course currently I'm only using a 900mhz Athlon.. That is until next month... I will be upgrading and having to look into more solutions myself....

Well at least that OK screen only comes up the first time that you load a game, so I have never personally found it to be an issue.

After learning (in 5 minutes mind you) how to compile MAME from source,  it was a snap to remove the left-right requirement...and add hi-scores back.   It REALLY is THAT EASY to compile.  If you learned LOGO or BASIC as a kid,  you have the brain-power to tackle compiling...trust me,  it is something an 8 year old could figure out.

Make sure to find the lastest hiscore.diff on this forum ...it includes HI SCORE support,  removes the cross-hairs in shooter games,  modifies the admin buttons slightly to make mame a little more user friendly for cabinets AND it removes the pesky intro screens.

Go learn to compile at Mr. Do!'s compile page:

http://www.mameworld.net/mrdo/compile.html

There is absolutely NO REASON anyone should ---smurfette--- about no hi-score support or any of the intro screens with it being THIS DAMNED EASY to recompile with those features taken care of.

I am using MAME v.108 and MALA v1.0 RC7a.  Adding the "skip_gameinfo" mame switch got rid of the "OK" and "game info" screens.  Below is where I added it in Mala...

Cheers Frizz  I quite fancy giving that a go..... If I can figure it out maybe there are a few more things I can tinker with to improve things for use in a cabinet. Might be a fun diversion just to try different things out. Maybee strip out some of the clutter that's for games I don't use or want. It might even speed it up a bit.

Can't hurt to give it a go can it.

I'm sorry to resurrect an old thread, but does compiling also allow you to remove the "warning" messages as well (such as video emulation not being accurate in Galaga)?  And how would one even go about removing stuff?  The info on Mr. Do's page seems to be referring to compiling update source versions to get the most from the bleeding edge releases...  I'm actually rolling back to .104 from .108 an an effort to gain speed... or is that unrelated...?

I've been searching around in an effort to try and find a good solution to removing warning messages, but it seems like every page I come across has information that directly conflicts or states a totally different method than another page.... then I look at version numbers and dates of posts and that opens up a whole new can of worms...

I'm not entirely sure at what I'm looking at, so I'm sorry if I seem like a total right-brainer...

(on GameEx) It is fairly idiot proof.

I guess I know my problem with not getting GameEx to work. Couldn't get Mala or Mamewah, either.  Did actually get Atomic to work - seemed the easiest of the bunch - but I prefer the GameEx interface.

I've been wondering about this but never really took the time to investigate.  Ummm, what exactly is wrong with Galaga's video?  It looks perfect to me.  ???

I believe they use a simulation of the starfield backdrop as opposed to actually emulating the hardware that creates it.  It looks good to me also, but technically, it's imperfect emulation.

Ok I dont know why but for some reason my brain just glossed right over this part of the post...  I don't get it either..  It was most likely because I was looking at this at around 3 in the morning...

Will do.

A couple of comments -

First, I don't think you can use the MKChamp method that we are recommending with 0.104.  I believe his .diff files only came out in 0.107 onward to add hi-score support back in (skipping intro screens was a bonus).  To use his method you need the right .diff file for the MAME version you are compiling.  If you search for posts by MKChamp, there have been about 4 different ones since MAME 0.107.

I explain how to do it here - http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=36217.msg318959#msg318959 but for MAME versions around 0.63 or so.

For intermediate versions, your best bet is to use SAdev's MAME Tweaks http://www.joymonkey.com/main/index.php?n=MAMEUtilities.CompilingMAME and compile your own or use either BuddaMAME or NoNAMEMAME without having to re-compile.

Personally, I think you might lose speed going from 0.108 to 0.104 - you definitely will if you use overlays or backdrops as you will be going previous to the reworked code introduced in 0.107.  I would definitely run the binaries and test any speed gain before I worried about trying to do a custom compile for a build that might not help you.
