Subwoofer enclosed in a cab?

For those that have subs inside the cab (I haven't tried, no cab yet) how does it sound, boomy? Did you have to do anything special, have a port, make the sub fire a certain direction, any sound insulation?

I have an altec lansing sub that gets very boomy if I have it facing the wall instead of facing the open space of the room and I'm fearing when the time comes it'll sound horrible inside a plywood box.

ANy suggestions or consolations?

I've got a bottom firing one, and it sounds great.
The chamber on my cab amplifies it somewhat, but that enhances it more than anything.
It can get a touch overpowering on heavy subwoofer games, but isn't too bad.

is it a computer sub or a hifi sub?  I have a hard time finding any computer speakers that don't distort.  I'm almost considering throwing my bose passive sub and cubes in the cab. 
I find Mortal Kombat to be a good one to test the bass during the game play.

No... It doesn't sound boomy.... Sub Bass is non directional. That is to say that the human ear is incapable of determining the direction from which the bass is coming.

The trick is to make sure that you have good stereo top end speakers in the space under the Marquee. this is where your sound will be perceived to be coming from. The sub in the bottom of the cab is fabulous when you're playing Space Invaders. Mine rocks the house.... and no doubt annoys the neighbours as well

I like to test with Asteroids.

A sub is one the best additions I made. It just sits in the bottom of the cabinet and it booms really nice.

Get a sub. Games like metalslug sound awsome with a sub, especially explosions. I use a Cambridge Soundworks speaker system for sound. Not the greatest, but does the job. Make sure to get a sub with an adjustable base volume setting though.

I'm using a Phillips 2:1 setup in my cab and the sound is excellent. You can always adjust the EQ on your PC to bring down the boominess while keeping the bottom end.

And make sure you secure the thing well.  Don't just toss it in there and let it vibrate the snot out of everything inside.

using a cambridge soundwors system in mine aswell, No boomyness, the sub sits in the bottom next to the tray that catches coins, No vent to outside

I have one of those logitech thx setups in my cab, sounded great.  Only problem I had was if I played it too loud it would overheat and go into protect mode, so I finally took the sub out of the cab and put it under the pinball machine. 

Worked for me though because I have a ps2, dreamcast and gamecube running to my cab also so I just use the extra space for controller storage.

Mine seems pretty good (5.1 Creative Labs job, just using sub and fronts though). I used some rubber draught excluder stuck to the bottom of it to prevent vibrations. Seems to have done the job nicely.
