Anyone use Happs Vinyl to finish a cabinet?
« on: March 30, 2003, 04:53:32 pm »
Wondering if anyone here has used Happs vinyl for convering a cab. Any comments? Any pics? I was considering this instead of laminate.

Thanks!

Great stuff. Make sure you pay careful attention to closely trimming the edges or when you fit in your t-moulding it will bubble up.

It works great! Make sure you have plenty of sharp razor blades / xacto knife blades for trimming. I'll see if I can get a decent picture of the cab i did it to. (My gameroom is dark w/ Neon and special lighting pics don't often come out well).

It's only practical when they put it on sale. I for instance got in when they had the HAPPS Pica 'D' Vinyl on sale for $2.50 it's usually at about $5

Does anyone know the thickness of this stuff?
I don't see it on the site:

Yeah, a close-up picture would be very much appreciated. I'm debating whether to go the vinyl or the laminate route.

so how thick is that stuff?
If you're able to bend it around the edges of the cab and tuck it under the t-molding it can't be very thick i guess

Plus, since this stuff is textured will you still be able to apply side art?

The Happ stuff is thicker/heavier/tougher. I couldn't get it to fold over an edge without some degree of bubbling so you'd have to cut it flush. That being said it's great for front panels, CP tops/boxes.

It is a very fine texture, no problems with sideart.

It's way too expensive normally. Ponyboy might be able to get you a decent price if it's not on sale at Happ.

That's a bummer. I was hoping to run it from the base all the way up the front, and fold it over the front edge of my Rebirth-style rotating control panel. The problem is that would require a bend of 135 degrees. I'm hesitant to try cutting it flush because I'm sure the vinyl would pop up at the edge over time, especially as the control panel was rotated and got some heavy use.

Finally--an opportunity to offer some advice as opposed to always asking for it!

Well done, sdrob04. How long ago did you do that? Is it holding up well? The same thought occurred to me, but I haven't been able to test the theory out. I'm glad to here it's a sound theory.

Knievel, did you use this stuff on the Xmen cab you did?

No, just paint...and that's not the X-Men cab :)

sdrob that's a great idea using the iron. I used to be a model plane builder and I've got one of those sitting here, just never thought of it. I'd be interested to know how it holds up in the future. It's beautiful stuff but I'm still worried about it lifting on the edges...gonna have to try it for myself I guess.

Did you have a Happ-Sock on that iron? ;D

Both the lamination and t-molding work was just finished this past weekend, so I don't have any long-term results just yet.
