Competition joysticks
« on: March 30, 2003, 10:31:23 am »
Like many of you, when I first built my cabinet, I decided on Happs Super joysticks and then never gave it a second thought.  Well, I noticed Bob Roberts was selling competition joysticks on his site for 7.50 a peice.  I thought I'd give them a try.

For an 8-way stick, these are perhaps the nicest sticks I've ever used, super acurate and responsive.  The thinner bat takes a little getting used to but I'm glad I swithed them out.  It's easier to find the diagonals because of the square actuator and 4-way games like crazy climber are much easier to play.  I do keep a dedicated 4-way (wico) for the classics but for fighters these are hard to beat.

Thought I'd share

If you like the Competition sticks but prefer the Super bat handle, then just swap the handles.  The shafts are the same size - you get the best of both sticks. ;D

Supers are nice too, I'm just saying if you do a lot of fighting games the competitions seem to do better.  The square actuator floats so I think you can still pull off those round house moves.

Yep, Happ comps and fighting games go together like pizza and beer. Same goes for Wico leaf switch joysticks for the classics.

i wonder why the tech guy at HAPP recommended the supers to me?
He said that many of the capcom series games used the super sticks and that even some of the mortal kombat games did as well, but that the mortal kombat did have a reference number showing the ULTIMATE STICK as being the "official" replacement stick.
STRANGE......

Supers are usually mentioned as the best all-around stick, competitions are usually favored by people who like fighters & want to feel the corners.  It's a personal opinion on which is "best".

If you like feeling corners, the competitions are probably better for you.  If you have no preference, IMO the supers are "better".  All a mater of personal taste, though.

BYOAC people often go buy what they like (or can afford) rather than what the original arcades used.  Also, different joysticks were used on the same game by different arcade operators depending on price, availability, model version (normal vs deluxe, 2.0 vs 2.1, etc), game manufacturer recommendations, and local preference.

I have comps now, and just ordered supers.  I had a few used supers that are old and suck, so I knew the difference.

Comps are good for fighting games (all but supers are !@# great for Zangeffs 360 moves!).

Supers are great for games like time pilot and such.

different sticks for different games.

my current plan (when I get the others) is to have for each player, 2 joysticks.  the left will have comps on them, then 6 buttons, then a super (then maybe 2 buttons more... havent decided checked for room).  '

Best of both worlds I'm hoping.  I will have to see how they do with using one for each in robotron and smashtv
