They are inferred... IE you can't see them 'lit up'. You might want to have a switch to cut power to them though. This might save energy and increase their life span
But having them behind smoked, turned on... you wouldn't see them at all... having them outside a smoked bezel, you wouldn't know if they are turned on or not.
Last... mount them horizontally. They will be closer together (assuming your monitor is mounted horzontally) and then you can get a bit closer. You ahve to stand about 3x farther away then they bars are from each other. And you just need to change the order when you calibrate it (start at the red dot and then hit the edges in order as if its swapped 90 degrees)
