LCD top gun hack idea
« on: December 06, 2006, 05:37:00 pm »
HI to all i just bought 3 new guns, my intention is to gut  2 of em and put the camera of the gun inside into a different Case (im' planning to use some cheap airsoft guns with the intrior removed).

MY options are:

2 shotgun (as HOTD3)

2 UZIS or mini Uzis (as op thunderbolt/T2/revolutionX, but the real playing expereince will be more like warzaid i think)

2 H&K mp5

Other options suggestion from you are welcome

Which one do you guys think is the best option? Should i mix the gun I.E. 1 UZI and 1 shotgun?

Why use cheap airsoft guns.... I hacked one of mine into a genuine (deactivated) Sterling L2A3 Sub Machine Gun.  Removed the electric recoil motor and fitted a non latching relay in its place, then attached that to a huge pinball coil inside the rear end of the gun that really kicks the bolt back. Powered the whole thing from a retired arcade power supply that gives the recoil enough amps to kick.

It's great fun!!

I'm working on a lens modification that will alow shorter distance between the gun and the screen as well.

I love the idea although I don't know how to do that.
The MP5's are awesome in the firing range but I haven't seen the airsoft version to compare.

I'm  a bit on low budget so cheap softairs are my only options, as alternative solution  I've found a metal replica of the UZI (OP wolf type)at 20 € but i like the shape of the MP5 cause i like the more ergonomic shape, metal replica are great but heavy so you cannot play for a long time without getting  your arms tired.

To shorten the distance between the screen and the gun i'm planning to use a wide angle lens taken for a mobile phone camera upgrade kit, do U think that this is a good idea?

Neat Idea Fozzy.

:)

I have a question, that you might be able to answer.  How high of a voltage do you think you could feed into the stock recoil coil?

USB=5V

I have an AC/DC adapter that puts a wide range out @ 1700mA.  I would assume 6V is safe, but how much would be too much.  ;)

The standard recoil on the LCD Topgun isn't a recoil coil! It's an electric motor that drives the topslide back through a set of gears.

I'd strongly recommend against using anything other than the 5V DC specified by the manufacturer. I don't think there is any internal voltage regulation in there. You can pull a high ampage +5V and Ground, direct from your PC power supply.

Been there! Tried that! Got the T-shirt!......

It won't work, because of the fisheye distortion you'll get from that lens setup. You also need a further lens system to remove the problem, and that's when it starts to get very expensive. The problem I'm finding, is that to work effectively, the lenses have to be as near to optically perfect as possible and that's what costs the big bucks.

Still on the case with that one....... You could give it a try and see if you get a better result than I did though.

Thanks for the pointer.

I was concerned with drawing the +5 volts DC from an Xbox port (600mA was too high of a current draw), when not using a PC.

I'll have my multimedia PC beside the xbox anyways, so I'll just convert a molex to feed the guns right from the PC's power supply.  :)
