EBay or Happcontrols?
« on: March 29, 2003, 01:11:00 pm »
I am wondering if the cheapest way to get the controls I need is to get them from Ebay or directly from Happcontrols?  For example, the following EBay auction has 2 sets of standard Street Fighter buttons and joystick for 39.99 (Buy it now price).

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3216553379&category=13718

Is this a good deal, or is it better to get them directly from Happ?  I would prefer to go with all new equipment (which the above is).  Are the buttons/joystick they offer good quality?  From what I can see it is pretty much the common "Ultimate" setup that most arcade machines use.

Thanks!

well.. from the real bob roberts (he sells happ parts)

Right now you can get competition or ultimate or super joystick for 7.50 each..
happ horizontal PB's are 1.45 each..

Comes out to 32.40...   35.60 if you want player 1/2 start..

So doesn't look like it's as cheap as bob roberts..

They want about 7 bucks for shipping on ebay.. which is probably semi-accurate.. but either way you can buy from bob roberts and save money and hassle..

Great!  Thanks for the info.  This leads me to my next question (since they are all the same price).  Which type of joystick is recommended?  I have heard various opinions as to which is best, and I guess it depends mostly on which type of games I'm primarily going to be playing.  I am going to be playing all types of games (fighting, pac-man), you name it, so which joystick is probably going to give me the best "overall" results?  I'm sure each one has its advantages and disadvantages, but which is the closest "universal" joystick?

Which type of joystick is recommended?
OSCAR has a great joystick review here.

His consensus seems to be:
Happ Super: Good overall stick.
Happ Competition: Best "fighter"-stype stick.
Happ Ultimate: Crap.

I've only used Supers, and I like 'em.

sasquatch put it pretty good.. I have four supers myself and so far so good.. but you might want to look at the competitions if you do a lot of fighter games

How do the competetion joysticks do on 4-directional games?  I play a lot of fighter games, but I also enjoy games such as Pac-Man.  Do they play pretty well, or do you run into a lot of problems with it not going the direction you want?  Also, how does the Super do on fighter games?  Is it pretty tough to hit the combos?

An 8 way stick is not near as good as a dedicated 4 way stick no matter what stick you use.

The competition has corners you can feel, the supers have a round action. I think the supers are better for fighter games that require half rounds or full round combo moves but thats just my opinion.

That's good to know.  I think I will go with the Super joystick, because I also REALLY like the old side scrolling "beat-em-up" type games (Golden Axe, Double Dragon, etc), and I couldn't imagine playing those kind of games with a joystick that has defined corners.  I think the Super will be an overall beter joystick for my needs.

Based on what I've heard and read, what you just said sums it up for most people.  The Super does seem to be the most versitle of the sticks.

I agree, the Super is probably the most versitle joystick.  I imagine that is why it is so commonly used in commercial products like the HotRod, and a Super-clone is used in the X-arcade.

Other joysticks like the Competition and P360 surpass it in some areas, IMO, but the Super is hard to beat for a "do-everything" control panel.

Of course if you like the supers you'll love the p360. Its basically the same stick but it uses optical switches instead of mechanical switches. I love mine. They cost more than 3 times as much though.

Thanks for the input.  You have all definately help me to make my decision.  I think I will be very happy with my choice.  I would love a P360, but unfortunately I'm poor and have to go the "cheap" route.  At $7.50 / stick you can't go wrong.

I have posted it elsewhere, but basically I am deciding on a cabinet.  I'm having to work with very little room space, so I'm trying to find a fairly compact model.  I've pretty well decided on the LuSiD's arcade cabinet, and modifying the width by 5 - 6 inches (19" monitor as opposed to 25" TV).  Are there any other smaller yet good setups?  I definately prefer the upright cabinet version, I don't particularly want to just do a "joystick box", or a table top version, because as you all know it just isn't the same.

How often does therealroberts.com put stuff on sale?  I guess I got there just a day too late, because now they are back up to $9.50 / stick, which isn't bad but $7.50 is much better.   :)

I've never noticed any rhyme or reason to what Bob Roberts does.  I get the impression that he just goes by "feel".

Just thought i would pop this in here.   When i called happ controls last week to get an order in for the super joysticks before the sale ends, i decided to take a second and ask the tech guys about what they recomended for the joystick type i was wanting.  I told them i was looking for something that was as close to the old street fighter 2 and mortal kombat joysticks as one could get.   The dude in the tech dept. told me that the super was the one used in ALOT of street fighter games and in some mortal kombat games, but that there is a reference  number for the ULTIMATE  joystick to be used to replace the original, but he said that alot of people were useing the super for the M.K games.

So , there ya have it from the horses...ugh..i mean from the happs mouth lol.

just an FYI i thought i would throw out to everyone.
I'm sure there are some arcade repair people out there with some input for this one....... ;D

Do they pretty commonly go on sale (every month or 2), or is it pretty rare?  I shouldn't need them for another month or so while I get everything ready to go, so if they go on sale rather often, I will just wait until that time.  Otherwise it looks like I'm stuck paying full price.   :(  Is 9.50 his standard price, or is that slightly discounted as well?

9.50 is actually cheaper than they normally are from Happ controls..  the 7.50 is about the lowest i've ever seen them..  So either way you get a good deal..

If you don't need them for another  month or so.. just hold onto your $$ cause they shouldn't go any higher..  just wait to see if it goes down lower..

Great!  Will do.   :)  I will probably get started on getting the wood cut and getting it more or less assembled first, and then get the stuff for the control panel.  I think most people do the control panel first, but it will have to wait a bit.  I should hopefully have a "progress" section on my webpage fairly soon.

If you an find an X-arcade to test out and you like the buttons/joysticks, they sell them on their site (www.x-gaming.com).  2 Joysticks and 40 Pushbuttons all with switches for $20!  The joysticks look just like the Happ Supers.  The pushbuttons are a little more "clickey" and are about half the length of the Happ buttons (my player start buttons are Happ).  The only catch is everyting is black.  No color options.   :(

Will they hold up though?  My little nephews are going to be playing the machine a lot, and so they might not be too gentle on them.

They seem robust enough to me... a couple of games of track and field with my buddies let me know they'll hold up just fine under duress =P

They're pretty darn good for the price.  1 caveaot with the buttons though, they won't fit in anything larger than 3/4" thick control panel... so if you're going the lexan route, go 5/8" wood 1/8" lexan...  (or use happs horizontal microswitch buttons which are now on sale for .99 )  other drawback of x-arcade buttons -> only in black...

I think since the Happ buttons are so cheap right now I will go with those.  Thanks for letting me know.  :)  Might as well take advantage of the opportunity to save some cash.
