How much will a playstation 3 or wii go for on Ebay

If you were an odds maker in Vegas, what would be the over/under of each consoles' legitimate Ebay sale before Christmas?

I would say 1700-2000 for Playstation 3, and 600-700 for the Wii. 

I think that it would be tough to handicap because there are 2 new systems this year, while Gears of War is a game that could draw people towards the xbox 360.

The availability of the Wii still remains to be seen.  Those paying inflated ebay prices on launch day may be kicking themselves a week later.

I'm not so sure the PS3 will have the same percentage mockup of a lot of consoles in the past.  The retail price is bad enough, it's going to be hard to find people so desperate they'll pay $1500 for one.

that reasoning doesn't make a lot of sense to me.  So the xbox360 were $400 and people were willing to pay $1500 on ebay for them, but because the ps3 was $600, people wouldn't be willing to pay $1500 on ebay?  The latter would be a better bargain.

He means in terms of margin. Selling a $400 XBOX360 for $1200 makes more money than selling a $600 PS3 for $1200.

We'll just have to see what happens. Console launches always stress me out.

Exactly.  To make that same 300% margin you have to sell the $600 console for $1800.  That's more than $1200.

Plus I suspect a LOT of those ebay sales are going to end up in nonpaying bidders.

DING! DING! DING! Anyone who pays that much for a console is a moron. If a winning bidder wises up before it's too late, they'll take the negative feedback hit and just drop the auction altogether.

Not sure how true it is, but the one PS3 auction I read in detail said that Ebay rules dictate that console presales must accept Paypal only as payment... that's pretty effed up, right there, either if true or that dude would say that if it's not.

its true, every ps3 presale auction has the guidelines shown which are required to be included in each description.

I only allow Paypal and the completely safe things like money orders or personal checks (and I won't ship until the check clears).  I've just been ripped off selling on Ebay before.  I was out $250 that I could have recovered had I used Paypal and shipped to a confirmed address.  I also will only ship to confirmed addresses (again, unless it's being paid for with a check or money order).

I don't think the Wii will be that bad.  From the sounds of it there will be 10 million by year's end.  They say 4 million for launch.

While Nintendo did estimate 1 million at launch and 4 million by the end of the year, they also said if demand was high enough they would ship out even more then that.  I think 10 million by years end is a bit optimistic, but I wouldn't be surprised if there were 6-7 million shipped.

I've seen varying prices, but here's a bit of news that I know is driving eBay crazy...we heard at Wal-Mart last night, whilst waiting for Wii, that there were 11,000 PS3s for sale on the auction site. 

Personally I'd seen some PS3 going for $5000 yesterday (or at least that's what the seller was asking).  That's where I'd say "Not only no, but  "   There's not a game system out there worth that much money (well, maybe my home built arcade machine, but that's about it!)

1075 + 100 dollar shipping. (Insurance and overnight mail) for the PS3 60 gb harddrive.  The prices people see over 2000 bucks are usually the buy it now price, reserve price, or non-paying bidder price.  I have a 100% feedback and ran a good ad.  There are so many being sold, most people do not look at the listing until the final minutes.  Everybody that lined up just wanted to sell it on Ebay.  Just like the 360, I can wait 8 months to get one for 600.  I took the 500 bucks I made and applied it to a 46" Bravia LCD.

Compusa had a sale where if you bought a 40" Sony television or bigger, you got to reserve a PS3.  I was hoping that the Ebay sale would pay for, or least most of the price of the tv.  (I paid 2700 for the tv + 600 = 3300 into the purchase) I knew that this was not going to happen once I saw how many PS3's were being sold on Ebay. 

When I was shipping it, the person at the UPS store asked how much I sold it for.  I told her the price, she then said, "If you would have tried Ebay you could have got 5000 for it."  I didn't want to tell her that is how I sold it.

I have a feeling that I have seen the beginning of a new urban myth.  People will always wish that they had a PS3 before the X-mas of 06 because they could have made thousands.  Truth is, I bet that a person can snag one before X-mas for 800-1000.

Still the 500 profit was a great deal.

The 60GB PS3's are down to between $1000 and $1200. That puts it inline with the 360 in terms of profit margin.

I got $1,250 for mine and I'm more than thrilled - I just wanted to cover the cost of buying it sometime next year (although now that I found out 1080i HDTVs can't display PS3 game inages because there is no internal scaler like the 360 has means I won't be getting a PS3 until this issue is resolved, if ever).

When you mentioned that, I had to go look up my TV's specs online. Mine handles 720p just fine so it looks like I'm in luck. Hooray for Samsung!

I also read an article online that said it's possible this might be fixed in a software update in the future, but nobody knows yet for sure. They also said original PS1 ans PS2 games won't be upscaled (which I think sucks) but that this might be fixed later, too.

You only got $1250 for yours? The guy at 7-11 told me that if you had a PS3 you could easily get a quarter of a million for it. You should have sold it on ebay.

Currently, the first party component cables for the Wii are fetching almost as much as the retail cost of the unit.  I knew I should have ordered more than one pair...

Correct.  The Wii component cables include both video and audio.

The SNES, N64, and GC all have audio and video from the same AV port, if that helps.  They do vary a bit on which pins in those connectors are connected out of the box but the connector is identical on all three.

I've got an old Snes cable that works great on a N64 and a gamcube...

Can't remember specifically which ones... but there are one or two instances of signals not available on some of those consoles.  Such as Svideo being available on the SNES but not the N64, or RGB already there for the SNES but not the GC, etc.  The common ones are the same for all three but some of the better ones are missing on one or more of those consoles.  They can be added with some simple jumpers to the right pins on the backside of the connector.

The first party component cables for the GC were video only.  You has to run the audio from the composite A/V port.

I guess that's the reason I mentioned that the Wii component cables have bothe audio and video leads.

im not sure why you guys are talking about profit margins. when people stick stuff on ebay they cross their fingers and hope for the best. besides, the BIDDER isnt thinking 'i have to bid X amount otherwise the sellers profit margin wont be correct'... its a very emotionally charged affair...
