Gauntlet legends question was there a 2 player version
« on: November 11, 2006, 01:37:09 pm »
I recently won a Gauntlet Legends board and hard drive on Ebay :applaud:
My question after searching thru KLOV and a few other sites was there ever a 2 player version of Gauntlet Legends.
Possibly as a conversion kit from another game.
I want to build my own from scratch and have rough working dimensions, but very limited space.
I tested the board last weekend and all seems to be working although I don't have a 49-way joystick to check movement.
Cheers

I would start by trying to trakk down a manual for the game. It would tell you if there's a two player version or not.

Hey Alan,
Thanks for the reply I've tried to get a manual but so far got a PDF type document on the Vegas board itself.
Will continue searching.

This company has a 2-player Gauntlet listed for sale.

This guy has a list of rehab projects, and says he's turning a 2-player into a 4-player. You might try e-mailing him.

This was just a couple from a quick google search.

Hope it helps.

Since you don't have the 2-p version would I be right in assuming you have the 4-p version? In which case, why not just use that and not plug up controls for players 3,4? There may be just a bit of wasted space at the bottom of the screen where it shows stats for those players, but other than that I don't know of any drawbacks.

If you're ever wondering about what was "officially" released, the safest bet is to look at the promo flyers. The main flyer for the game only lists two 4-player versions. This one, however, shows that apparently after it's initial release, a 2-4 player conversion kit was available:

The other "official" way to find out stats is by finding the manuals for the game.

http://arcarc.xmission.com/

Inside "PDF Arcade Manuals and Schematics" are the manuals for Gauntlet Legends and several for Dark Legacy.

In the service menu there's an option for cabinet type. Default is '4 Player 1 Cabinet'. I'm guessing this is the option you'll need to change. While this is a bit of speculation, Dark Legacy's Conversion Kit manual shows this same option and states that "You can also select one, two, or three Players."

Being this option is included, I wouldn't think there were multiple versions of the hardware (unlike Konami's 4-Player games). If it'll only work as 4-player, I don't see why you couldn't just hook up 2 out of 4 sets of controls. In Legends you pick your character, and only color is dictated by player-position. Pick your two favorite colors and go.

Hey guys thanks again,
Crowgill thanks for great info.
After redownloading (is that a word) the PDF I found the missing jumper setting pages and it does have a 2 and 3 player option , also there is a 8-way joystick option that will save some money on the build.
However I'm not sure if the game play will be as good. Has anyone compared the movement and playabilty of not using the 49-way joysticks.
I'm also trying to work out what the control panel artwork should look like, which 2 players to feature on it and if there's a 2 player overlay available.
I did check with Mamemarquees.com since I've gotten good service from them before but none were available on the site.
Does anyone have a scan or picture of this 2 player Gauntlet Legends CP?

One thing I never asked--what kind of cabinet are you putting it in?

The original 4-player CPO is 36" or so, so you probably wouldn't have to crop that much of the artwork off. My guess is that that was the way that Midway supplied it in the kit anyway.

I planning on the cabinet from scratch approx 30" wide and height about 66" or so. The curved front I should be able to replicate without a lot of trouble.
I want to use the original Dark Legacy artwork for the sides if I can find it.
Basically it will be a narrow version of the 4 player original with a 19" Happs monitor I already have.
The hard part seems to be finding the artwork Happ Controls doesn't carry it and they could not find an alternate source for me.
