I feel that my and many other members posts can be very offensive in that section of the board. I know that if my child was to join and be a member of this great forum for the joy of building and learning about arcade related topics i would not want him to be able to access that section at all.

Can we make an age requirement for that section to protect the members too young to participate?

I know it is nearly impossible to really verify the real age of new members, but the members who do put an age of under 18 should not be allowed to see threads in that area.

If he's going to learn about the building of an arcade cabinet, then what's he doing looking in Politics n Religion.... If he's old enough to read and understand, then he also knows what those two words mean and that they are not arcade related....

Tommy, you have really answered your own question. As you state, it is impossible for us to police the age of a registered user as it's simply an arbitrary attribute of the user profile. Most kids greater than the age of 10 are savvy enough to understand how to beat the system.

My suggestion is to educate your kids about the goings on in that forum, and offer suggestions  for the appropriate action (e.g. don't read it, understand the discussions going on, etc). But, as with human nature, preventing them from entering that particular forum will just encourage them to try harder to do so.

Like i said "sir", IF, the registered member was to put his age (as my son would) that would ensure his age and therefore would make the politics section off limits to him based on his registration age info.

It's just an idea for regular members that have younger arcade fans in the family, family that actually provide their real (under age) age and who want them to be on the board but not see material unsuitable to them.

I haven't seen a whole bunch of kids on these boards, though there have been a few.

Steps are already taken to make the site politically correct. I think these rules go a long way towards making the site kid-safe. Plus there is the curse word filter.

we have had a few kids here and for the most part they came up with better questions...

I think as far as when the ones who did ask questions that were on the common side people were more helpful because we understood they were younger and eager to get into the arcade building game...

That's pretty much true.  Usually, when someone asks a simple question, you either answer it for them if it's simple enough or point them to where it is in the documentation.  Then they can ask questions that reflect the fact that they've read the docs.  If they're just kids, we cut them more slack, since they'll need a bit more help knowing where to get started.

Most kids would find that forum boring as bat ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- so I doubt you have to stress over your kid becoming the next Dubbya or DrewKaree.

True, but my kid is not as funny as dubya and not as bad at making football picks as drew. It might cause trouble.

I'd rather not have some byoac member in a bad mood (chad) "going off on my kid because he asked a question" that members here for 5 or more years find stupid. After being here for so long couldn't a seasoned member find almost any and all questions stupid and make you want to act like a know-it-all smartass and get nasty. Some do just that even though they say in certain threads they are a great polite person and want to teach new and excited members.

Dude.  We only snap at people who ask simple questions and when we tell them where they can find the answer they get all indignant about it.  "How dare you suggest I read the documentation, I would never waste my time with documentation, spend your time rewriting the documentation to specifically suit me.  BTW, you're a tool and a complete waste of life for suggesting I read the documentation.  Now do it for me."

Or, alternately, we become frustrated with people who ask the same things over and over again and suggest they start to learn the material rather than be spoonfed it for each individual instance.

No questions are stupid.  Being an indignant little brat when the answer is "that is right in the README" is stupid.  Asking the same stuff over and over is stupid.

As for chad, i agree 100%, many people do ask questions over and over again as new members join.

If i was to join today and had a question i would rather start a thread and have a discussion no matter how many times others have heard my question.

You can keep on calling me a liar all you like, i will continue to enjoy the boards and when and if i see others try to bring down happy arcade folks i will always have something to say about that. That's not me wanting to be a mod here either, i do that in real life just the same.

Im 16 and involed in a lot of politics.  My parents were never in involded in it and was something I picked up on myself.  Dont try to censor someone young from someone elses veiws that you dont see as the right choice.
