Optimal spinner adjustment in Omega Race
« on: November 09, 2006, 09:12:19 pm »
Hi all,
I've been testing some different setup values for my Slikstik spinner in Omega Race.  It's pretty much playable, but would like to hear some advice from people who tried to tweak it to play as the original (spinner to spin on the screen ratio).  It seems to me that the ship may not rotate as smoothly as it could, so maybe I'm getting some "holes" during shooting.  I don't have access to the real deal, so can just think about the approximate from what I remember from 20 years ago.

Free spinning spinner may be great for some games, but it's just not the same as the original Omega Race spinner.  It has slight friction, so I don't over-rotate during tight situations (chased by the ufo).  Eventually, I'll get Opti-wiz and hook it up to my optical Omega Race spinner version that I have.  Yes, I know there is a pot version also, but I have both now ;D.  Basically, will keep separate original control panels for some specific games (like Tempest, Arkanoid and Omega Race).  Will keep Slikstik for multifunctional use, but probably upgrade that to the upcoming spinner from Randy.

Can at least someone tell me how many degrees spinner turns for the ship go 360 degrees on the screen in the real arcade game?  Looking for some reference value, so I can go from there.

Not sure about the original... but I have mine tweaked to 1 rotation of the spinner = 1 rotation of the ship.  Feels right to me.

Hi tivogre, I have similar setting, but would like to have it to the exact specs, as I would like to go from MAME to real arcade game, if necessary.  It is kinda important to me, as I would like to beat the official record that was established using MAME and, eventually, take a shot at the long standing one on the real arcade.  I have unfinished business from 20 years ago when my score was pretty close to that record, but I had to go home and wasted two or three ships, basically, so I could write my initials (and not someone else, if I left it).  Around 30-40 more minutes and the record would had been mine (but at that time I did not have access to this kind of information).  Anyway, next couple of months, if I have time, I'll be spending getting back in shape and then we'll see what happens.  If I can find a real arcade game locally, then I could try taking a shot at the real thing as well, so you can see that anything other than the original spinner/ship ratio will not do.
