Wiring Help
« on: November 04, 2006, 03:11:16 pm »
I need some suggestions. I have a mini-Pac, and am planning on making multiple control panels. Originally I was just going to buy 3 mini-Pacs, and put one in each Control Panel. This doesn't really seem like am effective way of doing things though. As several people on here pointed out, just using some sort of connector between the two would be much better. So today I went up to Radio Shack, but the biggest Molex connector they have is 9 pin. The Mini-Pac has like 40+ wires. Having to connect 5 plugs is lame. Any ideas on what I could use for this? Having seperate jacks for like Player 1 and 2 is reasonable, but any more than that I would liek to avoid.

That's an easy one..... Use an IDE Hard Drive ribbon cable out of each of your separate control panels (gives you 40 pins)  and an IDE socket (Motherboard Hard Drive Socket) which you then connect by a short length of cable to your mini-pac.

That's what I've done with the same problem and a single keywiz.

Did you just strip ends of the wires and attach them to the IDE cable wires? And if so, did you solder them, or what?

No I connect all my button and stick wires to a Choc Block connector (also known as a Euro connector) It's a plastic terminal block in a strip that has small screw terminals. Then you strip the wires at one end of your ribbon cable and attach them to the other side of the choc block and out the back of the panel.

You should be able to get a choc block strip from B&Q in the UK or from Home Depot in the USA or alternatively from 99% of electrical component suppliers.
