Chad- I think I agree partially with what you are saying. On the other hand though I don't think my wifes operation could really ever be considered MASS production, each piece would still be hand painted (1-2 hours just in paint for each piece) Also, molding her carvings will be the only way she would really ever be able to produce enough for how many people want them. It takes her about 4-6 hours to carve each piece depending on the detail and size, then you add in paint time and now you are at 8 hours per piece. She would have carpel tunnel in no time flat at that pace. Basically molding these pieces will be the only feasible way to realistickly deliver these in a reasonable amount of time or quantity what-so-ever.
Also, I believe what she is doing molding or not, as either way is her own piece of art, is really pretty mild compared to like say somebody pushing clik on the print button and popping off a few dozen copies of some original vinyl print side art...Another comparison could be an artist doing his very own original rendition of say this plumber/carpenter for example, that just so happens to look like this Mario plumber/carpenter that all of us game heads know dang good and well who it is. Said artisit then proceeds to print neee...100 or maybe 1000 copies with the click of a mouse and proceeds to sell the renditions for dollars. That my friend in my book would be considered mass production. Now had he hand painted each and every one of those 100 or 1000 copies...different story.
Chad, I understand what you are saying and appreciate the compliments...Bottom line is that we will have more happy campers if we mold the pieces and then hand paint them. She will be able to actually deliver this way and not suffer physically in doing so. The price will be significantly cheaper and the cost of the carved wood will probably go up. By the way, I succesfully molded for the very first time last night one of her recent carvings and the result was really, really cool!! We are excited!! Please don't try to burst our bubbles...not just yet anyway!!
