Ideas for a YDKJ cab?
« on: March 25, 2003, 11:23:21 pm »
I'm designing my MAME cab and I'm curious if anyone has made their cab have specific support for YDKJ. I'm not just talking about one of the standard buttons working with the various keys, but setting buzzers like one sees on game shows? Anyone worked with these? Are they easy to work with and where might one get them?

P.S. YDKJ = You Don't Know Jack, the popular PC trivia game.

What about this-

The IPac has 3 buttons that are shared for the leds. If you have a led and a button hooked upto the same input, and push the button, the led lights- regardless of num/cap/scr lock status.
I may be way off but you could hook up a buzzer and a light to that input, which would be activated when 1 of the players hits a button
THe obvious downside is that you couldnt make it "not buzz" if someone hits the button between questions for example. Also there's only 3 shared buttons, so no 4 player

Another thought- you could do this with any input, as long as you used a button that was rigged to a SPDT(?) switch- use one set of leads for the ipac input and the other to close a circuit on something like a doorbell

YDKJ is an awsome game.  I went on an ebay raid to get the games. I also recommend buying Nero for its image drive program Find a program that will let you mount an image, that way you don't have to worry about swapping out cds.

I apologize for the pimp'n of nero.

Are they still making ydkj?  because a single game gets old quickly.

Eric- Messa like the hand buzzer idea! I was actually worried about the real estate it would take up on my CP and that takes care of it well! Cool!

Brad- Hmmm This would work great to get the real lighted buzzer feel! Thanks.

Daemon tools will do this for free...

Are they still making ydkj?  because a single game gets old quickly.

Yes they are, there are currently 5 Different versions (but that doesn't include the sports, movies, or TV packages) and I think they are working another new version.

Where did you see them currently for sale?  I don't have them all yet.

The problem with doing a YDKJ cab is the need for a full keyboard for the gibberish questions... :(

Daemon Tools is limited to 4 virtual drives, though, so the Nero suggestion is still valid.

Ugh, Gibberish questions........ ewwwww. I have to think about that one. I can get a wireless keyboard for very very cheap but I need to figure out how to make that work with my IPAC doing the other keys.

Here's part of an email I got from the guy that made the YDKJ box from a few weeks ago.
Quote
As far as the write-in questions go, I have a wireless keyboard.  Shy of
making a quasi-keyboard with the encoder, this seemed to be the only way to
do it.  The primary appeal of the YDKJ controller is the hand-buzzers, so
nobody seems to mind passing the keyboard around for the questions.

Well that solves that. My question is will there be any problems using my IPAC and a wireless keyboard at the same time?

None at all as long as you've got your ipac inputs mapped to whatever the game uses

I use a wireless keybd/mouse with an IPAC, and Ive tried every combination-
keyboard->ipac->ps2 port
keyboard->ipac->usb
keyboard->ps2, ipac->usb

All work fine..

Have you seen those blue tanslucent roll-up flexible keyboards?  You could mount one of these in the CP, folding away the function and cursor keys, leaving just the main part of the keyboard visible... you could even light it from below!

Hooray!

For the handbuzzers, I just used 1/2 PVC with endcabs and SPST momentary pushbuttons from Radio Shack.  It is SO cool to have hand buzzers to buzz in.  No matter what though, you will need to have a full keyboard, which is why I chose to not integrate it into the cabinet, but rather to have it as a free-standing piece.

Honestly, the YDKJ controllers got played more than the arcade cabinet did at our last party, so I would definitely recommend this project!
