Anyone use a Happ Super as there 4-way?
« on: October 24, 2006, 04:18:20 pm »
Hey guys any of you use a Happ Super in 4 way mode as there 4 way joystick.  How do you like it.  Does it play 4 way games good?

I used to use one and then I switched to a Wico 4way. No comparison.

If I had to go with a 4 way now - I would use the reunion stick from Happ. Thats the same stick you see on the Galaga/Ms. Pacman machines and they feel real good.

The super had too long of a throw and didn't have a physical restrictor.

The supers don't have a TRUE 4-way mode.
The actuator is smaller on the 4-way mode, preventing the stick from hitting the diagonals.
The smaller actuator also means that the stick has to travel farther before making contact.

The result is a sloppy feeling stick that isn't diamond restricted.

I have seen the reunion stick and it does look real nice.  I would be putting it in a control panel that is 3/4" Birch plywood.  No plexi or artwork on top.  It has a shorter stick because it is made for metal CP.  Should I get a longer balltop stick for it.  I only plan on mounting/routing them in 1/4" of the ply.

If you do want a longer handle for a Reunion, you can get one from Tornado Terry.

http://www.tornadoterrys.com/surplus.htm

You can also use the Versa-ball sticks (the ones sized for a Super) from www.groovygamegear.com

And the SlikStik stainless / aluminum sticks (for Supers) ought to fit, too.

Terry sells the joystick with longer handle as a kit.  That is what I used on my control panel.

I used the Super as my dedicated 4 way, it worked okay but I really didn't see too much difference between it and the other 8 way Happ sticks (Competitions I think).  I had the SlikStik blue illuminated handle on it so that drew all of my friends to want to use it.

I upgraded to the reunion stick about a month ago and it has EXACTLY the same base so mounting was EXACTLY the same as the Super.  Also, the SlikStik handle fit exactly the same way (which makes sense because it's the same base on both sticks.

The difference is the restrictor plate.  I think the acuator is exactly the same size.  I held them end to end and couldn't see or feel any difference in the diameter.  This was obviously when I compared the 4 way side vs. the reunion.

I think the price difference between the Super and the Reunion is only about $5 and I highy recommend getting the Reunion.  I do notice a big difference in play because of the restrictor plate.  If you're going with a dedicated 4 way stick don't get the Super.

Does the Reunion have about the same size base to rout out like the super since I would be undermounting the stick.  Is the cutout going to be about te same size?

Another question I have is this.  Say you drill your original 1 1/8" hole right.  Then what is the best way to center the base part of the stick under the hole so you can trace the thing then rout out about 1/4" worth to mount it under?

So if I bought this TORNADOTERRYS EXCLUSIVE. HAPP JOYSTICK WITH CNC PLASMA CUT ADAPTOR + HARDWARE FOR YOUR MS PAC MAN. Will that be all I need to buy.  So it comes as one big package?

Also if you bottom mounted this would I need to install that big metal thing?  That huge metal rectangle looks like a mounting plate?  Would I need to install that part or just use the joystick base routed into the control panel about 1/4" depth?

I did think about using a Happ Ultimate, but I think I am going to go with the MS Pac-Man stick from Happ and get a longer handle.  Or possibly just order the setup from Tornando Terry.

The reunion has the exact same size base as the super, some people think its the same exact base just with a diamond restrictor plate.  I have a top mounted reunion stick and I think its great.

Definately go with the Terry bundle unless you're wanting a different handle from the one he sells.

Is the Terry bundle the reunion stick with the longer handle pretty much???  The terry bundle has this wide rectangular mounting plate.  What is it, and I don't think I would need it.

I guess I should have looked up the "bundle" before posting.  That bundle includes an adaptor plate to mount a standard Happ-bolt-pattern joystick to a Pac-man / Ms. Pac Man control panel.  You won't need that for what you're doing.

What I should have said is:  If you want a Reunion, and you like Terry's longer handle, then you should order your Reunion stick and the replacement handle both from Terry.  Call or email him for pricing on just those items.
