Arcade Search Engine
« on: October 24, 2006, 03:56:29 pm »
Here's a search engine I created with Google Custom Search Engine. It searches some of the major sites for home arcade machine development and emulation.

http://google.com/coop/cse?cx=012148301974694894713%3Ab-tmdkyo1nc

Right now, the list of sites is:
http://www.arcadecontrols.com
http://www.forum.arcadecontrols.com
http://www.mameworld.net
http://www.mame.net
http://www.arcadeathome.com
http://www.localarcade.com/arcade_art/
http://www.mameworld.info

What else should i add? How about any other suggestions? Oh, and any one can become a contributor at the site.

Here's the code, if you want to put it into your site:

<!-- Google CSE Search Box Begins -->
<form id="searchbox_012148301974694894713:b-tmdkyo1nc" action="http://google.com/cse">
  <input type="hidden" name="cx" value="012148301974694894713:b-tmdkyo1nc" />
  <input name="q" type="text" size="40" />
  <input type="submit" name="sa" value="Search" />
  <input type="hidden" name="cof" value="FORID:0" />
</form>
<script type="text/javascript" src="http://google.com/coop/cse/brand?form=searchbox_012148301974694894713%3Ab-tmdkyo1nc"></script>
<!-- Google CSE Search Box Ends -->

And here's a quick little logo I made:

That's a great idea!  You may want to add the arcade controls wiki as well.

Thank God for people like you, sphetr2.

You are all the ones who are making my project run so much more smoothly. Thanks! This site, and St. John, are just awesome. I had no idea there were this many of us out there until a couple months ago when I started researching.
I'm with stupid.

Suggestions:
http://www.retroblast.com/
http://www.mamedev.org/
http://www.mameworld.net/easyemu/
http://www.mameworld.net/tigerheli/

(I don't know if a custom google search of mameworld hits the easyemu & tigerheli's stuff)

It does.

I added retroblast, mamedev, and arcadeflyers.

Remember, any of you guys can become contributors at the site, as long as you have a Google ID (I think). There's a link that says "Volunteer to contribute to this search engine".

A few of us Canadian guy's use www.cgcc.ca/forum

May want to add that also.  It's not totally arcade based, but does have an arcade area within it.

A friend of mine found a site a couple of years ago that allowed you to search ROMs.  It allowed you to specify the type of controller (and possibly other parameters) to execute your searches.  Anyone know where this site is?

OK, Added.

Only problem is that I had to make a choice. Either include the ENTIRE forum (including "The Donut Shop") or nothing at all. I included the entire thing of course, in hoping that the extra forums wouldn't really appear in search results.

It's the same for the BYOAC forum. You can't really specify which boards to include, you must include them all because of the way the URLs of the forum work.

Like I said before, hopefully this won't become a big problem.  But if I add many more sites like this, the search engine might give worse results.

What do you think I should do? Do any of you guys have ideas for just integrating certain boards (other than including each individual post from that forum  ;))?

@dot

That sounds great! Make sure you share the link if you find it.

Yes, it's been a while, but I added two more sites:

arcade-history.com/
clrmame.com

I also wanted this to be seen by more eyes, so I can get more suggestions on what to include/take out.

Alright, I now have a short web address, http://googlecade.tk/

The longer version (with no ads) is http://members.verizon.net/seaview2/ (hosted by ISP)

dot.tk was the first URL redirecting service I found (that's free), so I used it. Are there any others that are better that I should use?

EDIT: Never mind, found a better one: http://www.googlecade.co.nr/

Good idea.   :cheers:

You should also add:

www.apachecontrols.com

And also make sure everyone in the master list is included in this thing.

Here is the BYOAC master list: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=54812.0

You mean, add every vendor's website? Cause I can't see anything else to add for some of those vendors...

I'll add www.apachecontrols.com.

If you look up in the thread, you can see that you can become a contributor (i.e., add websites of your own) if you go to the original website.

EDIT: Here's the 'become a contributor' link.
