monitor bezel ideas?
« on: March 25, 2003, 12:24:00 am »
Hi guys,
What are people doing to cover their monitors in their cabinets?  Plexiglass?  Plexiglass with artwork overlaid? underlaid?  foamcore/wood border?  What do you do where the edges of plexiglass would meet the cabinet?  use wood molding?  Any thoughs?  I have a 27" D9200 going into a cabinet with 28-3/4" of width to fit it (I believe the monitor is 24" wide, so I'm not afforded too much artwork space).
I'm thinking of framing and bolting the monitor to 2x4s to provide support, screwed into the cabinet, but I'm not entirely sure how I'm going to "pretty" it up.

The latest photo is here:

of course, the PC case is now mounted inside the cab, and the 14" monitor is just sitting behind the cabinet for now.

I'm using an original bezel designed to fit a 19" monitor. It works super with my 21" flat screen (not expensive btw, I paid around cad 300 used but there were some available for around 225 here in Ottawa.)

I'm sure you could score one pretty easily. In Ottawa, Great white amusements has a ton of scrap arcade stuff and probably has an appropriate bezel lying around.

I used a piece of posterboard with a cutout for the screen placed behind glass. I still need to cover it with art or instructions or something...

I'm planning on using a picture type frame, two sheets of glass sandwiching a printed out sheet with instructions and things on. It'll be screwed in to the cab, but not glued so that it can be removed later. It should be pretty easy to take it out and replace or change the bezel art.

I work in a framers shop, so it will be pretty easy for me to do this. I'll post on here to tell of the results.

The base of my bezel is foamcore; this then has a posterboard bezel surrounding the window in the foamcore board down to the monitor, and the entire bezel is covered in the same posterboard to hide the seam.  This is all then covered with aprtwork printed on a color laser printer on plain legal paper, followed by the glass.

This all worked well and looked great originally, but over time the posterboard framing the window in the foamcore has had a tendency to warp, and the electrical tape sealing it behind the corners tends to come loose.  This is no doubt due to the heat from the monitor.

You can see the results at http://mywebpages.comcast.net/celamantia/mamecab/bezel.htm.  Note the slight warping in the corners.

Note that Happ Controls sells actual plastic arcade bezels.  If I would have known this then, I would have bought one... next time I have to order from Happs, I probably will.

I used Happ's 27" plastic monitor bezel with my D9200.  Looks like the real deal, well, because it is.  :)

They come extremely oversized.  You have to score/snap them to fit.
