Super Auction - Milwaukee, WI - 11/11/06
« on: October 19, 2006, 11:06:44 pm »
Well, this is mentione din the TX thread but thought more people might see it in its own thread.  THe Super Auction place http://www.superauctions.com/index2.asp is going to be at State Fair Park on November 11th for their auction.  They tend to come every few months.

I'm hoping to go there.

If anyone else is in the area and will be attending, feel free to post here in case people want to meet up somewhere.

I will be attending.   :)  Hopefully, there will be a good selection of vids this time.  Last time, there was a "decent" amount, but lots of duplicates.

I'll be there hunting for a showcase, and maybe an 8liner

They'll have very few showcases going, although I bet they still have a yellow beer can shooting monstrosity that would be pretty easy to MAME.  Expect between $400-$800 for one though.

Haven't got the faintest clue as to what an 8liner is, so I'm gonna guess it's some gambling game, since I don't care too much about those.  What are those, and what's the cab look like?  Bartop, standup, cabaret?

Oh, and expect there to be MANY people there, since it's the last one before Christmas.  Unless you want a slot machine or box of tokens, you needn't bother getting there before 11 o'clock.

I may be there, not certain.  If I don't work, I'll head up for the test-out time and see what's there and decide if it's worth it.  Looking specifically for dart boards, and lots of 'em to drive the price down.

This will also be the auction where they'll have some weird crap so folks can make some money before Christmas.  Think TV's or soda fountains.  They have 'em at other times too, but this auction seems to bring that crap out of the woodwork.

Yeah, it's a video slot chassis, usually caberet, just another addition I'm wanting to add to the gameroom.
I went to the last one last year, and you're right, there is some weird crap people bring :)

Was that the one they had the goofy-looking old-time coin sorter at?  I think whoever bought it bought it for its scrap value ;D

Looking for some parts.

You'll know right away what they'll have for parts.  In the building they hold it in, look for the cashier.  Off to one side they usually have all the slot machines.  On the exact opposite side of that, they'll have all the boards, parts, etc in that area.  They usually auction that stuff off last.

My kid's team made it into the State tournament for volleyball.  I have off for the 11th, but if they win on Friday, I don't expect to see any of you.  If I end up showing up, I'll most likely be wearing the BYOAC hat Pixel recently made up for us.

Oh, and my "Screw the caribou, drill Alaska" shirt :laugh2:

golden tee 2005: 475

The Ms Pac's are missing, and from what was written on the auction card, it said they sold that first Golden Tee '05 for a grand, and you're missing the second GT '05

How long did you stay?

I got there about halfway through the first row and met up with a buddy and his kids for Trainfest until about 1:00 and then I stayed until the end of the auction.

They even sold CRAP bartop mega touches for what I thought were a bit high, and every friggen dartboard seemed overpriced to me (or else it didn't have cricket ::) )

Dunno why, but it seemed to be a low-price sales day. :dunno

I was there since 8am, left after they started on the jukeboxes, I wanted a showcase that went for more than I was willing to pay, so once they stopped auctioning the cabs, I was gone..
What did that WG 27" screen end up going for?
I saw written on the front "recondition"
Did that mean it NEEDED reconditioning, or that it WAS?  ;D

The WG went for $15  I had moved my car closer and came back JUST after they auctioned it off.  I hadn't thought they'd jump over to those things right away, otherwise I'da bid it up to $20 ;D

That other one, with the round piece all around it sold for $5.  Nobody wanted to take a chance on it and they didn't know if it worked or not.

I dunno if you saw it or not, but they sold what looked like a Betson trackball for $35

That PacMan Plus was OUTRAGEOUS!  It sold for $110 in THAT condition!  :o

Oh, and IIRC, the WG said "rejuvenator" on it, not recondition.

They didn't have a single touch screen sell for under $125, which I was hoping for as well.

That foosball table, while in EXCELLENT condition, sold for $725 - WAAAAAYYYYY too much.  Guy coulda got a new-from-a-store table for that price and wouldn't have had to mess with the token acceptor.

Was it a Tornado table? Those things go for over $1,700 new, and they hold their value for a while.

I think so.

I simply can't believe those sell for that much.  What makes 'em so much more valuable than "regular" tables?

I don't believe I've seen "regular" tables for a whole lot more than that, and the play on 'em is somewhat better than normal, but I figured it was from some type of bearing setup in the player rods.

What's the deal with a tornado table (since I'd LIKE to pick up a nice table, although that went for double what I'm looking to spend)

I used to play tournaments and the only table that any serious American foosball player would play on is a Tornado table. Once you get into the game, there is a huge difference between Tornado tables and anything else. Each brand of table has it's own peculiar style of play.  Tornado tables are fast and offer good ball control. The bearings are just plastic rings with silicone.

In the 70's and early 80's, everyone played on Million Dollar Tables. These were the tables with a blue playfield, and instead of 3 goalies - there were ramps in the corner. These tables were known to have good banking capabilities. This was a very defensive table to play on. The goals were only 5" wide. The ball is approximately 1" and the men are 1" each - making it hard to score. While a tornado table has men/ball of 1" the goal is 7" - making it easier to score.

If the foosball table is more for looks than playing, get whatever you want. Or consider bumper pool. Thats fun, takes up about the same amount of space, and more people are willing to play that. I have a foosball table, but people really aren't interested in foosball - and I have foosball playing friends!

That's right, "rejuvinate", doh
I wonder if whoever got the showcase with the 33" vga screen got a deal, without anything to drive it, I couldn't tell if the screen was any good...

Ah well, now I wait till next year...

They only had a single change machine that I saw.  Dunno how much it went for though.

Any bill changers / token machines?  I wanted one in September, but ran out of space and money.
I saw 1 changer, seemed in OK shape, not sure what it went for, I left just when they were starting that section..

Whats with the MK3 and 4's going so cheep? Were they beat up or is that the going rate?

They were in decent shape from what I remember, working monitors, etc.. It seemed like a low price day all around, unless you were buying a goldentee:-)

"Usual" rate is at least 2 bills more, but I wasn't there for the testing time or the auctions of those.  My guess is that the ones that went SUPER cheap were either seriously beat up or had monitor issues.

That's right, "rejuvinate", doh
I wonder if whoever got the showcase with the 33" vga screen got a deal, without anything to drive it, I couldn't tell if the screen was any good...

Ah well, now I wait till next year...

I dunno on that one, but you'll know if they got hosed if you see that machine at the next auction ;D

I'm seriously surprised at the prices on everything at this one.  I decided to go to Trainfest because I was mainly interested in a dartboard, but for those prices, I woulda taken at least 1, perhaps 2 machines home.

Here's hoping they come in February with the same amount of machines

Compared to the condition of the changers you normally see there, that changer could almost be considered "excellent".

Hey Angry Radish, could you put those prices up on the auction section of the WIKI. If you are not up on WIKI, I'll do it for you. Did you by chance write down descriptions as to quality of the machines. From Drews remarks, sounds like there was some termite heaven there. Pix?

Was it specifically a MAME machine. Many times you will see them marked as Multicade and stuff like that. Saint saw one machine that was being sold by a guy selling "a custom front end". Saint knows the guy who wrote it. I went to get a picture of it, but it was turned off by that point.

Man, sorry I missed this one.  :hissy:
(Had some family obligations to tend to)

I was asking around about the generic black MAME machine at the last auction. I guess some guy and his kid build one for every auction, and it always sells around that same price.
($800-900)  What was the $2000 one like? It wasn't in a Tron cabnet was it?

Yup, in a tron cabinet, ahhh! I had to do a double take.
Both had to be from the same guy, both were running mamewah as the frontend, looked exactly the same front end-wise

I didn't get a chance to do any descriptions, though there were a few that I remember quite well, I'll edit in the ones I can remember.

I been wanting to sell one of my cabinets too...

Tell me something. Whats the thought on selling a cabinet with Mame? Don't the auction folks know that there's a computer inside?

Is it illegal and looked down upon? Like child abuse?

Is it not illegal, but looked down upon? Like adultery?

Is it illegal, but not really enforced? Like owning roms?

Nothing horrible as far as damage like THAT, anything there that had any damage is from usage, like a MonacoGP with the whole top plexi cracked, seats tore up on a sit-down where you'd expect them to be tore up, crappy sides from being stacked up side-by-side, etc.  In the pics radish took, I can't point 'em out unless you met me in person, but there's about 7-8 ops that consistently show up at these things.  Looking at the prices listed, my guess is the Centipede's were all picked up by an older dude in a blue jacket with some white stripes down the side.  I get the distinct feeling the guy doesn't possess anything BUT that outfit ;)  He's an op....a TON of these games are often route games these guys simply bring in to trade around and if they lose one - oh well.  Our auction also gets a lot of re-sells, meaning they were there at the last auction, they'll most likely be at the next auction, and the one after that, and the one.... so....

ANd I thought it was illegal to sell MAME machines...  How does that work exactly.  THe one went for 800 and the other for $2000....  Sheesh.  THey specifically were calling out how many games it had and things like that.

Here's how ours works.  Unless someone SPECIFICALLY complains about the machine prior to the auction, they don't want to pull it whatsoever.  SuperAuctions really DOESN'T care, they simply want to make money selling these things.  The MAME machines typically bring in between $800-2500 depending on the quality of the build, and SA gets a bigger chunk of money than the typical $500 game.  They pulled a MAME machine here a few auctions ago, and did it one other time I can remember, but that's it.

Man, sorry I missed this one.  :hissy:

IIRC, there's a skinny older dude with his 16-17 year old who is the one selling these.  You'll know them because they're the ones that don't look like ops (the ops are usually talked to by name by Fred the auctioneer) but they snap up ANY cab that they can get for under $100.

My guess is they also made the Tron-looking one.  All the graphics are MAME done in Tron style.  That's about the 3rd or 4th one.  The reason I believe it's the same folks and not a resell is that each game looks progressively better.  The first TronMame I saw sold for about $800 and looked like it had a few lame stickers thrown on there.  That one there looked like a "professional" game.

My guess is that they've made up some sort of "install" disc for their front end where they simply copy everything over from a CD and "BAM!", instant "arcade game".  With the small number of games they had at this one, I'm certain that even if someone had complained, they'd have made some vague excuse and still tried to sell it.

Usually though, how these are sold is with the few legally available roms on them and a note that Fred makes sure to announce about "seller states hundreds more games available and if requested, will show buyer how to set up and obtain them".

Often they do.  In fact, a single-purpose cab was set up and it was announced that it had a computer inside.  They don't care WHAT is inside it, they simply want it to RUN so they can make more money off of it.  Those are often the games you can see the owners in there monkeying around with the insided during the preview and making sure it's working.

The blatantly MAME cabs often come all set up and don't need any tinkering (smart move, IMO) so you don't see who set 'em up, and the back is locked with the key "missing" but "available to the winner" ::)

That's prolly pretty close right there.

Radish, what do you look like, and were you there with someone else?  In this pic, I was either just off to the left, or behind all the dart boards.  Black BYOAC hat and sunglasses, "We're all gonna die" T-shirt?

Also, for anyone considering going, it seems as if all the pins were cleared out pretty quickly, and even with the small number of games like there are in those pics, our auction normally has pins from the dart board to almost the wall at the end there.  There's usually about double the number of jukes too, but remember, a LOT of resells, and there's usually more sitdown or larger-type games.

Radish, if you were the guy in the red sweatshirt with the baby who won a juke, congrats, but you seemed a bit greased ;)  Too many Lite's and you end up buying that damn juke that needs work just because "I rhheeleay luuufv eeyuou guysses mhaaan!" ;D

LOL, nah, I wasn't one of the drunks:-)
I snapped that photo just as I was leaving, I was going to hang around until after the auction was over to talk to John about some power supplies he had in his truck, but the way things were going I knew it was going to be at least another hour...
Funny thing is, while the auction was just starting, I was looking around for you, since you mentioned wearing your byoac hat. I imagine half of the hatwearing guys thought I was out to pick 'em up or something, because I was looking at everyone's hat ;D
I would have blended anyway, I look like every other late 30's guy there (except sober)  :police:

I know the guy that went home with the $200 centipede, so at least they all didn't go to the same guy:-)
On thursday last week I helped a co-worker carry a centipede out of that guys basement, turns out, he went to the auction to replace it, he missed it already, and wished he didnt sell it:)

I came in around this point, mebbe a little after:

I stopped at the table to get my bidder's number and meet up with my buddy at Trainfest.  The chick there was slow as mole-asses.  Took me 15 minutes to get my number, and I was THIRD in the line ::)

I showed back up around 1 p.m.

Hey, the missing chunk of games you have listed third, I can't believe that crappy little cabaret Ms Pac went for $500.  Is that the one, or do you remember how much it went for?  That's a consistent resell and I've been tempted to grab it a few times just for the boardset but I don't ever recall it selling for THAT much!

One thing I DID like a ton was the first Golden Tee '05 - the cabaret-looking version.  Happen to get a pic of that?  I'm looking to set up a Golden Tee and someone converted an old Atari Football a few auctions ago, but that cabaret setup looks like an even nicer solution!

Yep, that was the Mrs pac you were thinking of, some of the buyers there, were, how should I say...Stupid  :)

About the time they got to the second row, A guy walked over to me and asked "you work on these things?"
I said "kinda", then he goes on about how he wasn't sure he got a good deal, he just won a Golden tee 99 (the one that went for $700)
He goes on to say that someone said he could update it to 2005 for a couple hundred bucks, lol
I explained to him that he could upgrade all the way up to GT classic, but the graphics would be the same, just diff courses, and that to upgrade it to 2k5 would be anywhere from 400-700 bucks off eBay for the boards..
As we were talking about this, the GT 2003 with the rolling screen went for $500, hehe

If it had luminated buttons and Mamewah FE, I may know the guy who built it. Can't really make out the side art but if it had a Mame logo and rainbow colored swirly stripes then it is most likely the same one. The guyworks in a shop on the south side. I picked up some used parts from him, nice guy! He built that cabnet for his boss, I tried to get him to post some pics of it here cuz he did a super good job on it.  IMHO.  Don't think he has much time for internet tho.

Was that guy with the stripes down his sleeves standing on a folding chair during the auction? He buys a lot of stuff I guess, into restorations, works at the same shop mentioned above. In fact he picked up the dead Tron cab at the previous auction. His buddy does the flyers for transporting stuff after the auction.
