Processor speed

Besides the CHD games what CPU speed is needed to run MAME games at full speed? I was planning on getting this CPU (AMD Sempron 64 3100+) :

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16819104260

Will it run everything sans the CHD games at full speed? It seems like overkill to me but I'd like something relatively fast for everything besides MAME and for MAME itself. And it's a nice price as well. From what I understand AMD rates their processors differently. Even though it operates at 1.8 Ghz it is rated at 3.1Ghz, at least from what I can fathom. So will it be a good choice?

It should be fine.  But it still won't run every non-CHD game (there are plenty of non-CHD games that won't run on any available hardware today too).

don't worry about getting that sempron process, my friends gave me a hard time too when i picked up an A64.  sometimes there are just some killer deals out there on cpu/mobo combos and stuff.  i mean, who knows, you could double it up as another rig in your house.  but yeah, i say go for it dude.
this bozo thinks, so therefore he definitely is a bozo

ive been mulling on upgrading my cpu to 3.4ghz p4 extreme.  i have a northwood 2.8ghz.  so for fun i overclocked it to 3.4 and noticed canevil jumped from 22fps to about 30.  very playable now!

the cpu is still running cool, around 30c.  im going to try to bump it up to 3.8 and see what happens.  if it works, i might just stick with this chip.  but i also have 2 huge fans for the cabinet and a huge cpu heatsink. so that helps it stay cool.
