Apache Push / Pull Spinner Question
« on: October 16, 2006, 03:13:34 pm »
I haven't used a spinner since... since like the late 80's when I played a Tempest machine waiting for my mother to finish shopping at this one store...

So I'm not that familiar with spinners, I know they spin  ;D

But can this push/pull spinner act like an additional microswitch button when you push it?

The reason I ask, is that I initially didn't plan on having a spinner, but then I was reading about how they are pretty cool, and if it could be pushed, I was thinking of getting the blue anodized top style and using it as a KO button for my punchout styled project.

...if it works like that that is, but I may have to get a spinner anyways though  :)

It does... but I'm not sure if it would be a great button.  I think you might end up making a cool looking spinner, but not want to use it with knockout as a button because the happs button would be better.  Also, I would worry about damaging the spinner hitting it hard at an angle.... IE, not what its designed for... You could get it to work, but how well?

Not to mention, an expensive KO button lol.

Is this the happs button you were referring to? http://www.happcontrols.com/pushbuttons/53870100.htm

I like that, but its a tad big for my cp... maybe I can find a punchout cp on ebay sometime. I wish they made a replica of that original KO button.

I just found this:

https://www.asi-ez.com/member/~8LP2TBL6146.asp

Its expensive, like 14 bucks... and shipping is expensive...

But it may be exactly what I am looking for in a KO button, I'll have to see if I can get it working with a regular cherry microswitch.

Yes the push/pull buttons on the Apache Blackhawk are just like ordinary buttons, you can map them to whatever you want. For a while I had the push mapped to the Super Zapper in Tempest. One nice thing about the Blackhawk is that it's tough to hit the push accidentally. My old spinner, an Oscar V2 with push kit, was always click-clicking when I was just playing a regular spinner game. The spring weight in the Apache is light enough to easily push when I want to, but heavy enough that I don't push it when I don't intend to. Regarding the mapping, the Blackhawk push/pull buttons are fun to experiment with. Try setting them as shift up/shift down in driving games, that's kinda neat.

Eric.

...finally can logon again - thank you Saint! :)

Yes, the design of the Blackhawk uses Microswitches for UP and DOWN movements.

With that said, if you plan on slamming down with all of your might using your fist, while the Blackhawk is build very very well - almost like a tank, I am sure this would not be a great thing to do over time. :)

But for nearly all applications, mapping an UP or DOWN as a "super zap" or something like that is definitely the intent. So go ahead and map whichever you like for all sorts of games.
