Where to get a custom vinyl overlay made?
« on: October 15, 2006, 02:50:53 am »
I have a showcase cabinet and made some adjustments to my control panel (sorry no pics yet, but will post some). Basically, I drilled some more holes in it with my cordless drill/spade bit, and previous button holes exist. The control panel currenly has some sort of black material on top of the wood (I don't know what it is - may be vinyl).

I read somewhere that the best way to hide holes (and make the control panel look better in the process) was to make a custom control panel overlay with artwork made out of vinyl.

Is there a place online that will do this if you give them the artwork and dimensions? Oh, and I don't plan on putting any lexan/plexi on top of the control panel.

thanx!

This question is answered in any of a million places here, but try the Wiki first, search second.  "CPO" (or Control Panel Overlay) is a good keyword to use in your search.

I've been thinking about redoing my CPO artwork as well. There's no search results for "CPO", but a bit more digging and I found this:

I had an adhesive vinyl overlay made at Kinkos.  Granted, this will vary depending on the Kinkos employee you get.  I lucked out and got somebody that knew what they were talking about.

It was a full color, ink-jet plotter printed adhesive vinyl.  Then the guy took that and cold laminated it.  He said it would be "Outdoor Vinyl Sign" quality, so it should be somewhat durable.

I've had it on my CP for almost a year now, and havn't had any problems with it yet.

If I remember, I was charged by linear foot at a certain width, so if you can find that out ahead of time, you may be able to fill in some of the blank area with spare graphics or an instruction sheet, or something.

Hope this helps.

Did Kinkos end up being cheaper or more expensive than the online vendors of CPO's?

It would have been close, only because of the no shipping part of kinkos.

To be honest, I fully intended to order from Emdkay or MameMarquees, because of their reputation here, and of course to help support them.  But we all get those itches where we need something right away.  So I dropped my files off at Kinkos, thinking to only get a CPO to mock up my CP, and then later get the final one online.  But the one from Kinkos ended up being nicer than I expected.  (Keep in mind, I have nothing on hand to compare it too, but I do know the difference between good and crap.)

I've used Scott at mamemarquees.com a couple of times.  I highly recommend him.
