Make TV Monitor Primary?
« on: October 14, 2006, 09:18:07 pm »
Hi, I've been messing with a dual monitor setup (in planning stages) and I have a 9700tx ati card with s video out. Hooking up the s video to the tv and then vga to a crt monitor I can make the TV primary... BUT the CRT monitor clicks off and goes into standby mode. I tried going into desktop display settings and setting the second monitor (now the crt) to "enable windows desktop on this monitor" but still nothing. Is it possible to have the TV as the primary and the vga CRT as secondary? Any help is appreciated :)

You can change settings in your Control Panel/Power Options.  Select:  Turn Off Monitor-->Never and disable your screensaver in Display Properties/Screensaver.

Thanks,  I saw that already had it set to both of those, but now noticed a few things:

1. The Windows XP screen comes on and the TV looks fine but the CRT has 1 inch black bands on the top and bottom of the screen. Once it gets to the desktop, the CRT shuts off into standby mode. (it clicks as if changing resolution but turns off)

2. On the primary/secondary monitors when I select advanced from display options for each of them, the monitor properties has the TV listed as NEC 95 (the crt) and the CRT as just "default monitor."

3. In the catalyst control center, it has the TV as primary and the CRT as secondary which is right, but still nothing displaying on the CRT... (for instance I select identify and the 1 shows up on the TV but no picture on the crt)

Stumped hehe.  :dizzy:

Right-click your crt in Catalyst Control Center and select either:
Extend * onto CRT - for two screen display or
Clone * with CRT - for same display on both
Stretch horizontally/vertically onto CRT - for widescreen display

If you select Extend, you can move Windows Media Player, for example, by dragging it to the second screen and maximizing it there to watch a video just on one screen.

By default only one (main) screen is enabled.  Don't forget to disable the second screen when you don't use it.

As for the bands on the crt, make sure you adjust resolution and change refresh frequency to more than 60 Hz.  It will eliminate flicker that will be easier on your eyes and should take care of the empty bars.  Any additional space can be taken care of with the stretch adjustments buttons on the crt itself.

Hello and thanks again torez, going into Catalyst Control center I am able to set the CRT as primary and the TV as secondary and play something like punchout with the playing screen on the crt and the top screen on the tv.

I can also clone the two displays so that the main playing screen is on both.

I cannot, however, make the TV primary and then the CRT secondary without the CRT simply shutting down into standby mode. I am wondering if its simply a limitation, and that you cannot make the tv primary and crt secondary?

What I'd like to do is have the TV as the main monitor and a 15" lcd on top of it as the secondary screen for some games that work that way. I don't have the lcd yet, so I'm testing it out with the CRT. Any suggestions as to how to get that setup to work? Even if it only worked for a few games... I really want that authentic punchout feel for the top screen lol.  ;D
