Adding a fire button to top of Happ Super Joy
« on: March 23, 2003, 03:10:07 am »
I remember seeing a page detailing how to hack a Happ super joystick, to add a top fire button.  There's a good chance I got this page off a link from the old message boards, circa end year 2000.

Does anyone have this link?

Be wary of the instructions if you plan to do this hack.. I would think that the Ultimates have the same size shaft as the Supers, but have yet to find anything (yes, I've tried several sizes of nut drivers, too) that fits perfectly.. always a little jiggly or won't fit at all..

Maybe I should get another Gorf joystick.. those things are great and I can probably rig it up to light up the insert when you pull the trigger :o.. probably a bit bulky for dual sticks, though..

No, the Supers do not have the same size shaft as the Ultimates.  The Ultimate has a 5/16" diameter shaft, and the Super has a 10mm diameter.  You can easily find nutdrivers with a 5/16" diameter shaft, but if you use a Super base, you will have to find something else to use as a shaft.

kspiff - I imagine you were using a 3/8" (9.5mm) diameter shaft, so it would be a bit too small as a replacement for the original 10mm.

Nope, this wasn't it. :(
I'm talking about instructions on adding a button at the top of a HAPP Super.  It involved drilling through the joystick handle and through the shaft.

Anyone?

You can buy just the parts to the top fire super joysticks from happs.
Here was my dilema - I had 2 supers from an old project, but wanted them to be trigger sticks.  TheHapp Top Fire Button Super Joystick uses the exact same base, all I did was type in the part #'s in the search field.

You need everything the super doesn't use.  I think the total only came to about 15$ a joystick for the parts, compared to 30$ for a complete joystick.  This would be a lot easier than trying to drill a hole through the super shaft.

another option mentioned once is that the super old school wico atari joysticks had a balltop-esque with mini fire button on top...  since wico made both home/arcade sticks this particular shaft is supposed to fit in an arcade joystick base (supposedly)

there's a link/info/pic in an old thread... but if I dig it up for you, we'll be bidding on the same crappy wico atari joysticks =P

I havent looked too hard yet but I'm coming to realize that I need at least one topfire button.. I've got 2 T-sticks, which are similar mechanically to most other joysticks(base mounts under, the shaft goes thru the CP, a nut under the base is what holds it all tight, etc)

Will any of these replacements, like in the picture above, work with T-sticks or are they different sizes? Has anyone doen this to a T?
