"Little Monsters"... completed!
« on: October 04, 2006, 11:57:25 am »
I was able to get rolling on this project again once the outside temp finally dipped below 105.  Here's some specs:

Height: 51"
Width: 20"
19" monitor
Duron 900Mhz running MAME, ZSNES, Gens

The control panel is nearly complete.  I'll update with pics of that in a few days.

Just waiting for the glass now.  Otherwise, I'm done!  ;D

(Boy added for scale)

Dwarfed by my first project.

Poor kid...did you really have to yank him out of the shower for the pic?
 :laugh2: Just kidding.

Nice build.

Yeah, Heff Jr. was running around in his underwear that morning so I told him to throw something on for the pic.  :)

Since I don't know how tall your son is and I know how big a cabinet is - it looks like your son will be about 9' tall when he finishes growing up....

Nice looking cabinet.

That's really a stunning cab.  What type of materials did you use (plywood? MDF?).  Also, did you use paint to finish it or is that red vinyl?  Also, what type of buttons are those?  Did you light them with LEDs?  Sorry for all the questions!  The artwork is great and the CP is very clean.  Nice work!

Thanks!

I used 5/8" MDF that I hand-laminated with Formica (two-tone; red & black).  The buttons are Happ translucent that I bought from ponyboy and lit with LED's.  The LED's are powered off one of the 12 volt legs of the computer power supply.

I did the artwork in Photoshop and borrowed (very) heavily from Space Invaders.

Nice job.  What type of bezel did you use?

That's a standard 19" bezel (got it on ebay to save on the shipping costs).  Not exactly a perfect fit but it works and, once the glass is on, I think it will look okay.

Really nice cabinet.  After my current project, I may have to do one of these for the kids.

Just curious about the CP.  Why did you build a box, vs building within the width of the cab?  Did you think 20" (or 18.75") was going to be too narrow for 2 players?

Also, how much thought did you put into the fact that your kid(s) would be constantly growing?  Is that why you used an angled monitor?

Again, looks great!

Really good work.  That looks like a perfect sit down and play cabinet for adults too.

Thanks!  Well, fitting the all controls into the panel (which is about 23" wide) was pretty tight.  I think I could have compressed the layout slightly and fit it all into the width of the cab but the separate panel/cabinet design was what I used to scale the plans off of so it just kind of worked out that way.  If you're hinting at the idea that it would probably look cleaner with an integrated cp, I agree.  I just ended up going with the design I was more familiar with.

As for the angled monitor, I like the look of the original Dragon's Lair cabinets and styled Little Monsters somewhat after them.  I'd say that my son could comfortably play this for the next five to seven years, my daughter around four  or five, not to mention that we have another one on the way so it seemed like a good "investment".  Plus, it's a cute little sucker!  :)

Really good work.  That looks like a perfect sit down and play cabinet for adults too.

It will be as soon as I build a custom bench for it!  ;D
