Need INPUT Please. Tekken 3 (Good MAME?)
« on: October 02, 2006, 12:02:26 am »
Hi,

I need some advice. I have the chance to buy a working Tekken 3 for 400.00.

The following is his description to me. It is in good condition structurally and plays great with a big bright 25" arcade monitor. It has the T3 artwork intact on one side, but the other side has been painted black and the bottom 4 inches of the artwork under the paint has been removed and painted over again. The control panel coin doors and everything else are in great condition.

I think it would make a great candidate for a MAME cabinet (see his photos below) but my question is two fold: Do you guys think it is worth 400.00 considering I have to gut it and pay for the Mame setup/hardware and those expenses related to converting it? AND Would I be commiting sacrelidge to plunder such a good T3 cab in the name of Mame?

He was asking 450.00, but I got him to commit to 400.00 and an in person viewing on Friday to see if I want it.

I need to let this guy know by Friday, so any input would be much appreciated.

I got a working Tekken 3 with a 25" monitor for around $150, but I was buying 2 cabs.  EIther way though, $400 is too much for that machine.

It's not really a "Tekken 3 machine"  Its just a fairly generic cab... looks like it is a Konami cab.  They are great candidates for a MAME machine.  I've used one before for a MAME and have an Xmen in the basement that will eventually get the same treatment.

A working Tekken 3 board can fetch $75-100 on eBay if you're lucky, but I still wouldn't pay any more than $300 for that machine.

I bought a working Tekken 2 cabinet that looks nearly identical to the one you are looking at. (No side art though).

Mine:

I got it for $300.  I thought it was a good price at the time, but now I realize that I probably paid a bit to much.  (I give myself some leeway on the purchase since it was my first).

Other than that, it is quite a satisfactory arcade.  It turned out quite well for mame, though I am not completely finished yet. (It has a nice big CP, one reason why I liked it when I bought it).

As pointdablame mentioned, it is probably a Konami cabinet.  Mine definitely is.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the recommendations guys. Everyone seems to agree that 400.00 is over the top for this machine so I think I'll mention 200.00 to him and see what his response is. If he wants to sell it for that, I'll buy it, most likely he'll pass.

Now, thanks to your input, I won't be stuck with an overpriced cab that I regret spending soo much on. Great Help!THANKS AGAIN!

I personally would pay the $400 for a cab with a fully working 25" monitor with no burn and no water damage on the bottom of the cab. New arcade monitors cost that much alone. Opportunity cost, namely your time, gas, and other expenses in looking for another cab, come into play here. How long will you have to look to find another cab?

$400 may be a little high, but that is a great cabinet model for MAME.  Lots of CP space, monitor at a pleasing angle, nice large 25" monitor!

Well, when you factor in the cost of a decent working 25" monitor, 2 coin doors, monitor glass, bezel, marquee, sideart, wood, hardware, marquee holder, CP clamps, etc. it may come out to close to $400 or more.

Plus you would save yourself the blood sweat and tears associated with building a cab from scratch.  Believe me, it is rewarding to build your own, but it is a LOT or work!!!

If this is your first time, I would strongly suggest to get an already build solid cabinet, if not this one, then another one.  It will probably save you time and money in the long run.

My first cab was a conversion, it was really easy:
http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=54556.0

Then I built another cab from scratch for my friend using my converted cab as a model.  It was a LOT of work!!!  But it really helps to have a cab already there as a guide for construction details and measurements.

Good luck

You will save around $300 by picking it up yourself.  Big/not very old monitor, big control panel, dual coin door (good for 4-player setup), working condition (sell parts you don't need).  Overall sounds like a good deal.  It's a big cabinet with alot of aerial estate to customize it the way you want.  Make it at least a 3-player with more than one trackball (well, it's just me as I would use it for Rampart hehe).  If you have more than one trackball, you could hook them up to additional spinners for a neat setup.  Overall, I would grab it, if I had space and it was local pickup.
