GGG Ice Trackball and Apache Spinner
« on: September 30, 2006, 08:40:10 am »
I am getting ready to make my 3rd control panel for my cocktail table and want to make sure I understand this.

I plan on using GGG Ice Trackball and the Apache Spinner.  Is this all I need to connect it?  I understand I plug in a trackball to the spinner.

OR

If I use the the spinner from GGG will the tops from Apache controls work?  I can hook it trackball to the GGG spinner also right?

Thanks

The GGG Ice Trackball should be able to connect to the Apache Controls (primary) without any difficulty, provided the GGG unit will allow for +5, GND as inputs and send outputs for S1 and S2 (signals 1 and 2) - This is a typical configuration for trackballs. Check the online PDF reference manual on the AC website for details on how this would work.

Since most of our trackball testing was with HAPP standard trackballs, I'll let Randy T explain more to see what additional thoughts he might share on this topic. :)

To answer part 1 of the second question, yes. The knobs from Apache Controls are compatible with any 1/4" shaft spinner out there today. As for part 2 of your question, not sure if a trackball can be connected to the GGG spinner control circuit. Again, I'll defer that to Randy.

Let me know if you have any additional questions.

  :)

The Electric ICE trackball has it's own interface.  It is an Opti-Wiz based board and allows for connection via USB or PS/2 (with appropriate adapter).  It does not need to be attached to a spinner, nor any other interface to function.

Yes, a number of gamers are using this configuration for their controls.  The standard Opti-Wiz to Trackball cable works for spinners with Z selected as their axis of operation.

OK Randy, do I just need to order the trackball and your spinner?  I would want USB.  Should they all be the Number 1 device??  It will be the only trackball and spinner I use?

Yes, they will both run on their own and can both be device number 1.  The only time you would want a device two of any of the USB products is if you already had another of that same type of product (IE. 2 spinners, 2 trackballs, 2 GP-Wiz, etc.)

Even though the optical controls are based on the Opti-Wiz, each product group has been given its own product ID so there is no confusion at the OS level.  An Opti-Wiz won't conflict with a TurboTwist spinner which won't conflict with an Electric ICE Trackball, and so-on.
